I'm Kinda Bummed

My wife took this picture of airtanker 490 (Lockheed Electra) working on a fire near where we live about 2 weeks ago.

490.jpg

Two days ago this gorgeous old machine probably did its last flight when the left main gear stuck and wouldn't cycle up or down as it was returning from Slave lake back to Red Deer.  Its doubtful we'll see her in the sky again and considering there were only about 20 of these flying in the world this really hurts an old airplane lover like me. I will also have fond memories of working this old girl on fires over the years.

Still a superb landing I have to say.

If you remember the Ice Pilot show a few years back, there was an Electra that landed with only one wheel down. That plane was repaired and flew again but this tanker with a full belly landing might have made its last landing.

Really sucks, but I assume there were no injuries.  For that we can be thankful.  Hate to see such a beautiful plane lost after all these years of service, though.

Wow!

Is there any way you could buy some parts off this plane Ken or will they keep it as parts plane?

They are like me in that they have a yard in their property at Penhold with a bunch of Electras they have obtained  all over the world.  Pretty much all the ones on the yard are too structurally corroded and stripped out to fly again so they are parts donors, This one may join them, but I sure hope not.

Sure was good piloting.  The retardant tank took the brunt of the impact so maybe all will end well...

As for souvenirs I really don't think they'd open to that as it kind of reminds people that airplanes do go down and that isn't good for the company image.

On the plus side it didn't appear to catch a wing, so hopefully the damage is repairable.  On the down side it even if repairable it would miss the season that it's most needed...

Hopefully they can bring 'er back!

Back in the winter of '71 while skating on Burlington Bay, the police came out with a megaphone and ordered everyone off the ice. It seems there was a plane with some landing gear down on one side that wouldn't go up, and landing gear on the other side wouldn't go down. The pilot kept flying over Stelco & Dofasco to see if some good old-fashioned blast furnace heat might unstick it but it didn't help and he had to make an emergency landing on the frozen bay. He landed it and it spun a little but did not flip. It was a small plane but I can't remember if it was a Cessna of Beach Craft or...

It would be nice if they could repair that old Lockheed, but unless a dedicated bunch of enthusiasts do it for free, chances are it will be considered too expensive to fix.

There used to be a Dakota that I would first hear then I would go outside to see. It made regular runs with parts from GM in Detroit to GM Oshawa about 12 or so years ago. Those old radial engines sound unique.

Yes. A couple weeks ago there was on flying over our place for a few hours ... The sound sure grabs your attention.

Last  round engines in Ab been gone for a long time. These Electras ,if I recall correctly, have screaming Rolls Royce turbines.

Have to  agree with you though. Miss the sounds of the old Pratt and Whitney R 2800s.
