Need advice on applying clearcoat on a basecoat that was applied years ago

Our daily driver Accord appears to have only been repainted in a base coat years ago. I have proper 2k clear to apply but wonder if there should be any special prep to the basecoat (other than cleaning and degreasing).

Wet sand? Scuff with a Scotchbrite? Nothing?

Well any chance at chemical adhesion is gone.I would sand it with 600 and if you are going to prep it for clearcoat why not do the base also. It wouldn't be very much extra time or cost. Just my opinion I'm not a painter.

True. It looks like there was a minor fenderbender and the front clip doesn't quite match the rest of the car. Can you still buy the standard basecoat or would I have to mess with a water based paint?

i would sand the base coat with 600 very well any places you miss will not make anything stick, repaint the base..I myself always let the base dry for a day then 400/ wet lightly again not missing any areas then clear..latex drys so fast that with out sanding in between it won't stick..not like the old days when the chemicals would re act together as one

Just my opinion...but if not repainting base coat and not knowing how many coats of base there are...with 600 you might break through in a hurry especially on the edges and once you do your toast. 1000-1500 should be enough to remove any waxes/tarnish etc. Be careful on edges...even with 1000 as they break though easily. After wet sanding ,check in daylight for even colour, then clear. Never cleared an old uncoated base before. Just thinking...what I would do. If re painting base...do as Bill suggested

Not too up on the province to province regs, but I put a 2009 colour in solvent on a 80's 1ton dump. Think newer basis are water born, but all the clears are still solvent based? Should still be able to get your base in solvent.

Perhaps I should just go with the Duplicolor paint system? It's a single stage Lacquer.

nope new clears are latex..have been for a long time,,thats why so many cars are having problems with peeling clear coats. Was thought to be the greatest thing as because of the no solvents it wouldn't Yellow out   .they don't sand the base before clearing and the darn stuff won't stick.I am lucky and still get the old school enamel .hardner, and reducers alot less prep and sanding, and you can buff the crap out of it with out burning through which works for me as I don't have a garage and have to tarp things off.. BUT it takes longer to dry between coats, and I have to pick times when a certain niebor of mine ain't outside as it pretty stinky....really would like to use the latex in my case,,,but the price is Crazy

A friend of mine repainted his old Suzuki Sidekick using Tremclad diluted with (I believe) mineral spirits. He did it in his garage and I was impressed at how well it looked.

May have to wait a few weeks to do this. With all the rain we've had the mosquitoes are something out of a horror movie this year. Even it my garage I'l be bound to get a few hundred just by opening the door to get the car in. They'd be sure to land on the paint.
