Buying a car from the US?

Hi guys,

i am in the middle of making a deal for a car in the US. What are my best options on bringing it back? Is it easier to tow it myself, I dont know how hard it is to do with the paperwork? Or what is involved?

do I get a brokerage to do it? Use a towing company? How much taxes do I pay, do I still pay Gst, etc? just wondering What are the best steps to do and options I have?

car would becoming from Minnesota in a couple of months... What would you recommend?

thank you for your advice...

Just go to the Registry of Imported Vehicles website. They explain everything there and now even have a connection to a broker that will get your IT number for you for $75. You need an IT number in order to fax or email your information to the US side of the border crossing you will use.

Also, am I right remembering that the seller in the US also has to do some sort of paperwork with the IRS there to sell to a Canadian?

Not that I know off. There is a form that has to be filled out by the original owner and returned to the DMV in Florida when the insurance has been cancelled on the vehicle. It is a declaration of who the car was sold to or if the car was sold to a wrecking yard or if the car was unusable and put in storage. I have bought quite a few cars in Florida and never had an vendor fill out any IRS forms.

If you plan on getting a temporary trip permit to drive a vehicle home you have to pay the Florida sales tax on the car to get a trip permit. If towing the car no permit necessary.

With our low Canadian dollar and the trip cost and all fees and taxes it has to be a real good deal on a car to import it to Canada at the present time. What ever the car cost is add 50% more in expenses and money exchange.

Title has to arrive at border crossing 72 hrs. before car shows up!! Not all border crossings handle this so check that out & hours, so your not "stuck" there after they close up that department!!!! I'd say say ad 50% + some. Also make sure you have all documents including a copy of ad as Cdn. border may dispute price & appraise it to their $ figure, no "hankt Panky" on lower bill of sale, you'll only "screw" your self or have vehicle impounded!!

The one site I looked at shows this:

itn.jpg

I believe the ITN is the number the US seller has to have from the IRS. If I am right, you can't get past the US side without providing them with the ITN. This is to assure the US citizen pays income tax on the amount of the sale. At least this is how it was explained to me when the new laws came in a couple of years back.

I think Im just going to get a shipping company handle and deal with it. Seems like a headache. I think one company quoted door to door from Minnesota to Toronto 1300cdn plus 300? Or so for paperwork... seem reasonable?

So the car comes from the States? I pay tax at the border. And the more tax at the MTO? What a rip off!
Do I still need to get an appraisal? Or is the bill of sale, and taxes paid on value at border okay enough for them?

I can't answer the tax questions but make sure you keep all your correspondence with the seller, have it all printed out and organized.

And do NOT try to fudge the numbers at the border! If you try to pull a fast one to save taxes you'll be sorry. I know a guy who's truck and trailer were impounded. It cost some money to get them back... And now every time he crosses the border with that truck, the questions start because it's flagged at Customs. Just not worth it.

I agree with that. I can see the border issue and understand that.

but the loops that the MTO here puts us through is not right. Get an appraisal, then get another appraisal for insurance, and so forth.

How many times has a classic car being bought in Ontario been Taxed? But thats another issue...

For the record.when we brought our Camaro across the Cdn border at Emerson Mb., I had car listed as $21,000 USD for GST purposes. The Customs rep interrogated both my wife and I separately. She

thought we were lying about the original price, we had paid 3 years prior was $7,000 less than the car was listed at on the website they unearthed. I pushed back a bit by asking her if

she paid full price for cars she purchased and laughed. She wasn't impressed but the border experience was a typical joke. They didn't even inspect the car. Just harassment.

I wonder if its any different if I just hire the brokers and towing company to just do it? Do they get the same hassle?

I did Internet research. I spoke directly to the US border crossing (Calais, Maine) to get info. beforehand. I had the seller meet me there on US side (for free, part of the deal for me buying the car) and we transferred the car onto my carrier... I brought it over the border and did the paperwork. I showed the website listing that I bought the car off of. It was all very painless and easy.

I've said it numerous times before, but not for a while so here it goes:   I don't know how you people live in Ontario.

 Ahhh...didn't know.

Still, you can contact the border point where it is coming through and get their take on how they would like you to proceed, and there is no such thing as enough paperwork/evidence pertaining to the purchase.

You pay federal tax at the border and provincial tax at the MTO. My brother has had problems with the MTO with having no appraisal, but if you push the point the MTO will accept the tax valuation from the border that the feds put on the car. Paul

I didn't need a tax appraisal when I brought wagon into Ontario from Sask. they took the $ value written on Sask. title. Said out of Prov. vehicles are done that way??? Didn't argue & saved $ 40 to have it appraised!!!

I just brought a car in March this year. Simple really. Hire a broker and they do the hard work

I hired a broker and a transport company and waited for it to arrive. When here I took all my papers and went to ministry and paid provincial tax and transferred it over.

no appraisal required.  Spoke to the minister of finance and was told province can only collect on the value based on Canada customs docs. Appraisal was not required or legal. If I was asked to complete one have the office call the minister of finance for clarification. I had no issues
