Another mopar story sneaking on to a Pontiac site - the story of the 69 CHP Polara 440

( sorry Carl but I promise there is a happy chevy ending to this story)

https://www.streetmusclemag.com/features/car-features/a-specter-of-an-interceptor-derek-scoulers-1969-chp-dodge-polara/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=a-specter-of-an-interceptor-derek-scoulers-1969-chp-dodge-polara

A bit of a personal aspect  to this story is that back in August 1969 I bought the issue of Cars that had the story of this car ( and I still have it)

I quess for quite a few years this car held the top speed record in police car testing at 138 MPH until the 1994 Impala LTI dethroned it with a top speed of 143mph

There was a year or 2 when California ran with Oldsmobile Delmont 88 sedans with 425s (in '68 they had a 400-horse 455 on the B07 Police pkg). Cops didn't like them. They also ran some Mercury Monterrey sedans occasionally. I seem to recall that in 67-68 Chevrolet would allow the triple-carb'd 427 on B07 Pursuit cars.

Mopar had the Police & Taxi market cornered for years. That '69 Polara, I can just hear the throb from those duals. No limited slip, I wonder why?

Back in the early 2000's, I worked at a GM dealer and the local RCMP had a '96 Caprice with the LT1 that had a high speed misfire complaint... after a major tune-up, my service manager and myself took it for a test drive... with the digital speedo, 240kph was all it would do..

240kph=149.13mph..... fastest I have ever went! (lol)

Great story!  Thanks for posting it.

To provide balance in the automotive world, I'll post a link to a Chevy cop car posted on a Mopar site... wink

My brother and I had the 1971 version of that. Chevy Biscayne with a 454 & 140 mph speedo. And yes, it could use all of that speedo.

This brings back memories as a kid, waiting for the school bus at the top of our street. Our local police (2 constables) would sit back from our bus stop hidden from view, waiting for cars to run the bus stop sign. Nobody could outrun their 1968 Hemi Roadrunner. We would all wait at the door of the bus to see if they were going to launch that thing after someone. That was the beginning of my love for muscle cars.

Well my older cousin was a Delaware State Trooper back in 1970 after doing his stint in the Marine Corp. He told me stories about driving these Cop Mopars, his was a 1970 Fury 440 Super Commando, copper colour car if you can believe it. Anyway he claimed they routinely pegged the 140 MPH speedo on hot shot runs on the highway. He ended up rolling one in a pursuit since handling was not a strong suit of these Mopar barges.
