M-22 for 18N411487 Camaro found

I was online searching- cause that's what I like to do- and I came across this Kijiji ad for an M22 for Camaro vin 12437/678N411487. The tranny is dated P8C22-C. I'm just putting it out there if anyone on our website knows the car or knows of it's whereabouts. Would be nice to have it reunited back where it belongs. The ad is # 1441286859.I think she's giving it away at that price. Look at her other ads there is some decent BBC stuff there as well. If I where down east I'd have that gear box already in my garage................

M-21
Welded tabs on it so its not a steal.
If internals are good its a $600 piece at most. Anyone wanting a decent trans wont run it with the repaired tabs. Transplant the internals into another case and youre better off, but it would more than likely need freshening up at the very least anyway.  I had two transmissions fail because of welded tabs, and they were welded by pros. They're never the same once theyre broken.

umm, iirc
A = M20
B = M21
C = M22

lemme go find the ad...

EDIT:

Good catch!

I see at least one ear welded;
the first clue that is isn't an M22 is the lower drain is not tapped/plugged;
The single input identifier ring is M21, and sure enough, that looks to be a "B" not a "C"

I have understood that welded tabs isn't that big of a deal unless you're running a very stout vehicle - so as long as the welds are done well, I wouldn't hessitate to run it...
But I agree at $800 it isn't a smoking deal - but probably more fair a deal than you suggested.

Interesting information, thank you for posting, is 411487 the last 6 digits of the VIN? I have a 68 Camaro convertible, factory M20 4 speed so if I wanted to confirm if it's the original transmission the last 6 digits of my VIN should be stamped in the same location? If so, what does the 18N in that same alphanumeric sequence stand for?
Thanks in advance for any feedback you can provide.
Calvin

yes, this is what "numbers matching" is about -the engine and transmission both have the last six digits of the original car's vin stamped on it.

The location isn't precise, and it was done on an assembly line by people - but this is a pretty good idea of where to look.

IIRC:

1 = Chevrolet
8 = 1968 (model year; not calendar year)
N = assembly plant that this transmission was installed in; Norwood Ohio

Thanks I'm aware of the numbers matching issue, just wasn't quite sure how to go about confirming on the transmission. Sounds like mine should be 18N as well since mine was built in Norwood Ohio, thanks again sounds like I need to crawl around down there with my flashlight :).

meh - just make note of it next time you're down there to adjust linkage, or flushing transmission fluid.

I just picked up another Muncie yesterday, add that to the one I got on Monday... 8 Muncies so far.
4 M-21s
2 M-20s
2 M-22s
Plus extra cases and other parts
I also have a good friend that has about 60, yes 60, M-20-21-22s, all in various stages of condition. Even has original rebuild kits and gear sets from the factory. He found an old transmission shop that closed in the early 80s and he snagged everything they had. This was back in 1990 apparently. NOBODY knows that hes got this stuff. He bought it all (literally for the price of one transmission now), put it in his back shop and theyve been there ever since. My father and I are the only ones who have access to it, and he said were the only ones that will get it...eventually. Well see what happens! Pretty cool to walk into an old garage storage area and see all of those sought after transmissions though. Kind of jaw dropping!

James, I Have a buddy like this in Vancouver as well, over 50 Muncies he collected since the early 80s, tons of big block chevy ... engines and 12 bolt rear ends, he always said someday it's going to be worth thousands, he was right. Hoarder too, won't sell anything ... lol

Don, I'm located in Dartmouth. Relocating to Yarmouth (for three days) for the car show. Leaving in a few minutes actually!

and here my brothers tease me for my little collection;
I have what appears to be five transmissions neatly put aside in my garage;
only on closer inspection would anyone notice that one is a ST-10, two are Muncie (330) 3 speeds, one is a complete (69) M20, and the other is a complete empty case awaiting me to build it as an M22 (I have everything already to assemble it).
