Old Outboards- Moved from the Tin Man in Kijiji forum

Thought I'd copy and paste this from the Tin Man posting, may be sme others who will add to this.

Not to hi-jack, but if you read my tagline in my signature in the following post you will see I like old OMCs: *Tag-line*.

There's a couple of Johnsons in the closet plus less than 2 Gales, and a low-hours Evinrude Yachtwin 4. And about 7 old double-line pressurized fuel tanks. Dad gave away his 9½ & his Neptune 1.7. My brother has dad's '67 Johnson 3 folding weedless plus his Starcraft fishing boat with a '93 Johnson 30. Bro bought a brand new boat with Evinrude E-TEC power so dad's boat likely will be sold.

Bearcat 4-stroke, as in 55 horse? I believe they were Crosley based. Boston Whaler owned them in the sixties to the last ones in 1972.

Yup, that's the motor, they are known by other names and have Fisher Pierce on them. There is a bunch of old pre war stuff, the outboards with no covers and gas tanks attached, one is so old, it has a lot of brass used. Several of those tall boys gas cans, 11 or more Johnsons and Evinrudes which are new enough to have covers, Martin 45, and a ton of merc stuff. Also, a new kit for a Gyro helicopter (in a box so think its new), what I think is a jet engine of some sort, maybe for the Gyro.

I also have an ad up for a Johnson 25, a 1953, all rebuilt.

That is a neat old '53. Introduced for 1951, that 25 is the grand-daddy of the Big Twin motors that eventually made their way to 40 horsepower after 2 displacement increases. It replaced an ancient unshrouded 22-horse opposed twin that looked like it was from the 1920s.

Tall boy gas cans, now those are rare. They were only produced for 1949 & 50 before being redesigned to a lower profile like we are familiar with.

Shown below are a "modern" 10, an ancient 22, plus the stepping stone motor that pioneered the pressurized fuel system on Johnson for 1940, the 16-horse. It was easy to convert to an external gas tank for 1949, the first year for such a thing in outboards. The 10 & 16 are shown with those rare tall tanks.

Has a few of those Sea Horses, plus a Clarke like this one. The one he has has the original case and manual, all pretty much mint, a real beauty.

Pricing & History

This is a complete Clarke Troller. I do not know much about it or it's background but I can say that it appears to have good compression and I pulled the cover and it does have spark. (sparked between points) The serial number is TP391808 which I believe makes it a 1938.
This is a rare outboard. The motor is under the water and the prop is connected to the crankshaft of the motor. The points and spark plug/condensor are also submerged. Just the 1 quart gas tank and carburetor and coil are above water. It is only 21-inches in length and weighs approximately 10 pounds.
The Clarke Troller may be the most unusual outboard motor ever made. It was developed by D.R. Clarke and his Clarke Engineering Company in Detroit, Michigan because Clarke was unhappy with the cantankerous outboard motors of the day. What made it so unique was that the 1.2 HP motor was completely underwater in the lower unit! This made it easier to cool and made the need for gears obsolete because the prop shaft acted as the crankshaft! You started the motor by putting a rope around a sheave on the propeller then lowered it into the water once started. The top of the motor held the coil, gas tank, and carburetor controls. These were battery ignition not magneto. The Clarke Troller was only made from 1937 to 1941 and sold for $35. It was 21 inches high and 10
lbs. and fit into it's own canvas carry bag! Very rare and highly sought after by collectors. This motor has had one repair on the cavitation plate. Looks like an old fix of the plate and it was riveted. This would be a very easy repair to have it welded as it is all aluminum and not pot metal aluminum. Please look at the photos carefully. I don't know much about the motor. It does turn over and appears to have good solid compression. I did see spark but it was between the points when I pulled the rope. I have not been able to get it running. I did not put gas in the tank. I only dripped it into the carb. This appears to be a complete Clarke and appears to be complete but I don't know much more about them than what I have read on line. They appear to be very rare.
This motor also has the very desirable variable pitch propeller. It can be adjusted by loosening 2 screws and turning the two brass blades.
Plus this one has the original tool kit which includes the plug socket, and handle/screwdriver. I am selling for an elderly family member so please bid accordingly.

Got her all boxed up and ready to mail. Looked in the points and plug area again and it appears that the small thin wire clip that goes on the spark plug may be broken. Should be a very easy fix to solder a new one on the plug wire. It looks just like one of the so-called jesus clips but missing one side. It still makes contact with the plug but this may be why the spark that I saw was between the points as mentioned above The points will now need to be adjusted also as I moved them and don't have a feeler gauge. It is a very small tight area where the plug and points are located. How they engineered these I have no idea.

Speaking of old outboards, I picked this old Evinrude up last year. It has good compression but I haven't been able to get a spark so far although I really haven't tried all that hard.

I think it is early 20's but it looks quite a bit like the ones that were built from about 1910 on except that it has a rope start.

It makes me think how much this technology probably seemed like magic to the people of the time in northern Canada who up till hen would have rowed everywhere.
