Interesting Dealer/ restoration shop in Vegreville Alberta - The Garage Auto Shoppe- a couple of 409s

A friend of mine just returned from a road trip to Edmonton

He stopped in at this shop

https://www.thegarageautoshoppe.com/

One of the vehicles in the inventory is  61 Impala Convertible with a 409/ Automatic - was this combination available in 196?

I SAY NO,  STANDARD ONLY.

IF THAT IS AN ORIGINAL 61 BLOCKno

THEN IT WOULD BE AS SCARE AS HENS TEETH

ONLY A LITTLE OVER A HUNDRED WERE PRODUCED .

AND THE PRICE WOULD SHOW IT

NICE CAR JUST THE SAME

Standard only in 61 and 62 with a 409, and all factory 409's were solid lifter until the 340HP 63 409. You couldn't get a powerglide with a solid lifter 409, not sure if they ever came with a PG, certainly not in 61 and 62. As Ourwagon said, a 61 409 is extremely rare and the block is worth a small fortune.

Aluminum Powerglides were offered behind the 340-horse 409 1963-65, which were hydraulic lifter engines. The 1961 360-horse 409 plus the 380 & 400 horse, plus the 409 & 425 horse 409s were manual transmission only. There was a special 305-horse 4-barrel 348 offered on the 1961 Impala SS with cast iron Powerglide.
