Going for a Walk for a Couple of Months...

Hi guys as you may or may not notice during the Alberta fire season I don't post much as my mind is on other stuff. That's over for me now and normally I get back to being a car guy and crabby old husband for the winter.

However this fall (like tomorrow!) my young(ish) bride and myself are attempting to walk the Camino Santiago which is a old pilgrimage trail in northern Spain that runs about 1000 kms to the Atlantic ocean, if you have the stomach and legs or it. I've actually been trying to train for it by walking with a 25 lb pack up to 20 kms a day (which is what we will have to make over there.)  I actually feel much better and am almost ready to go for it except for picking up a blister on my last training walk. I probably would have actually lost some weight too if it wasn't for my habit of quaffing a couple of delicious cold beers after every walk, but hey that's what I'm planning to do there so that's part of the training I figure.

Anyway if you don't see me on here for a couple of months I am just busy trying to survive.

Maybe I'll dream about buying an el camino when I get back.

Wish you all the best and talk to you in a couple of months (unless I crap out early.)

Just had a session of a few tests as I was finding it hard to breath.  Scans showed nothing to be worried about and the Doctor suggested more walking..

I barely do any walking and have trouble with dragging my feet.  Tough some times to keep my body over my feet or i break into stumble..

Go for it my friend.  A super way to travel and see the country and it will probably add years to your life.

Thanks Cliff,  I think it will put me in better shape than I have been for a long time. Its hard to get to started but if you get forced like this it may lead to better habits down the road. (so to speak.)

Exactly what happened to me Ken.........we got a dog in October and she (like clockworks) twice a day demands that I get off my butt and take her

for a walk....45 minutes each walk, then a 15 minute play session of "try to catch me" in the back yard.

Hasn't done too much for reducing the spare tire, but without her I probably would have more poundage to worry about. biggrin

When you go for a walk you really Go For a Walk. Best of luck Ken. Looking forward to some good stories at an upcoming coffee meet.

Good luck Ken and enjoy. Will give you lots of time to think about cars. I've had 3 different sets of friends do it and they have really enjoyed it.

Have a great trip. If you find yourself near (or in) a wi-fi Cafe post some photos.

We'll try. I'm just a little afraid we will just get progressively more weathered and grubby but I guess thats all part of the fun.

Is that what you do when you "go walkabout" down under? I think this might be a bit more than that...

I finished the 65 K Mantario trail in 4 days yesterday with big hills and marsh with some rain plus my 40ish lbs back pack, hard work but worth it ...

I've been to Spain, up north by the Pyrenees all the way south to Gibraltar. Very interesting place. I did not make it west of Santander on the northern coast. We did see the Guggenheim in Bilbao, with all it's modern art. Normally I don't "get" modern art, but in the Guggenheim I actually "got" it. Don't expect to be catered to in English in Spain, so when it does happen you can be pleasantly surprised. There are Iberian Lynx & wildcats in the mountains, though sightings are not commom. One thing that made me smile were storks with their giant nests all along hydro towers in N.E. Spain.

We got back from Cinque Terre, Italy in June. Walking up steep hills along the coast, there was an amazing 90-year-old man in our group that hoofed it up to the top of the highest heights. He could have showed up many a younger man. I guess him owning a dog that likes long walks has really kept him up.

Ken, this sounds like a real adventure. Keep us posted when and if you can. Good luck!

So I'm back and having a bit of trouble adjusting to Canadian weather etc.

I don't know how many would want to hear yet another boomer talking about his life adventures so I don't know if I should even talk about it much.  Suffice it to say I'm having trouble getting back in my normal groove (or is it rut?) because of the totally different mindset and perspective this sort of long departure from routine will give you.

If you want to hear some impressions, let me know and I'll try to pick out some of the more entertaining or teachable moments of what really amounted to quite an endurance test for an old fat Canuck.

Please please do Ken. It will be fun to hear of such an adventure which seemed TOTALLY out of character from what I know of you!

Ok, I 'll have to do it in installments though as there will be a few pictures to post.

Hope you get more enjoyment out of it than I did!
