Hi guys as you may or may not notice during the Alberta fire season I don't post much as my mind is on other stuff. That's over for me now and normally I get back to being a car guy and crabby old husband for the winter.
However this fall (like tomorrow!) my young(ish) bride and myself are attempting to walk the Camino Santiago which is a old pilgrimage trail in northern Spain that runs about 1000 kms to the Atlantic ocean, if you have the stomach and legs or it. I've actually been trying to train for it by walking with a 25 lb pack up to 20 kms a day (which is what we will have to make over there.) I actually feel much better and am almost ready to go for it except for picking up a blister on my last training walk. I probably would have actually lost some weight too if it wasn't for my habit of quaffing a couple of delicious cold beers after every walk, but hey that's what I'm planning to do there so that's part of the training I figure.
Anyway if you don't see me on here for a couple of months I am just busy trying to survive.
Maybe I'll dream about buying an el camino when I get back.
Wish you all the best and talk to you in a couple of months (unless I crap out early.)
Thanks Cliff, I think it will put me in better shape than I have been for a long time. Its hard to get to started but if you get forced like this it may lead to better habits down the road. (so to speak.)

Exactly what happened to me Ken.........we got a dog in October and she (like clockworks) twice a day demands that I get off my butt and take her
for a walk....45 minutes each walk, then a 15 minute play session of "try to catch me" in the back yard.
Hasn't done too much for reducing the spare tire, but without her I probably would have more poundage to worry about.
Quaff a couple Spanish beers afterward also ... enjoy!

Friend of mine just finished it ... This Holland girl did 28K a day and finished it no problem, she's about 60 ! Enjoy and Best of luck ! I'm sure you can do it ... I finished the 65 K Mantario trail in 4 days yesterday with big hills and marsh with some rain plus my 40ish lbs back pack, hard work but worth it ...
I've been to Spain, up north by the Pyrenees all the way south to Gibraltar. Very interesting place. I did not make it west of Santander on the northern coast. We did see the Guggenheim in Bilbao, with all it's modern art. Normally I don't "get" modern art, but in the Guggenheim I actually "got" it. Don't expect to be catered to in English in Spain, so when it does happen you can be pleasantly surprised. There are Iberian Lynx & wildcats in the mountains, though sightings are not commom. One thing that made me smile were storks with their giant nests all along hydro towers in N.E. Spain.
We got back from Cinque Terre, Italy in June. Walking up steep hills along the coast, there was an amazing 90-year-old man in our group that hoofed it up to the top of the highest heights. He could have showed up many a younger man. I guess him owning a dog that likes long walks has really kept him up.
Ken, this sounds like a real adventure. Keep us posted when and if you can. Good luck!

So I'm back and having a bit of trouble adjusting to Canadian weather etc.
I don't know how many would want to hear yet another boomer talking about his life adventures so I don't know if I should even talk about it much. Suffice it to say I'm having trouble getting back in my normal groove (or is it rut?) because of the totally different mindset and perspective this sort of long departure from routine will give you.
If you want to hear some impressions, let me know and I'll try to pick out some of the more entertaining or teachable moments of what really amounted to quite an endurance test for an old fat Canuck.
