Yogi came to visit!

We just spent 12 days at our cabin on a small lake in NW Ontario, the most beautiful place in the world as far as I'm concerned! Last night I was awakened from a dream about 2 PM when I heard a lot of commotion on the back deck of the cabin, which is right outside the bedroom. When I opened my eyes I noticed the motion sensing yard light was on as well. I ran to the window pretty much knowing what was likely going on but by then it was too late, there was nothing to see. However, in the morning when I went out I found this plastic bottle which I use as a mouse poison feeding station. I drilled the big hole so the mice could go in and eat the poison I put in the bottle but the small holes in the mangled metal lid and in the plastic bottle were most certainly Yogi's doing. It's a bit unnerving knowing he was right outside the door and he's hungry too... It know he's a lot bigger and tougher than me because a number of our cabin neighbours have seen him hanging around. The scary part is, our neighbours were over for coffee and walked home to their place in the dark only a couple of hours earlier with their 11 year old and their 3 year old.

They hang around my backyard..so you kinda get used to them. Although I met one when heading to the shop. |He started to walk away ,so I proceeded towards the shop. He stopped and turned around...so I stopped!! Only 60' away!! He carried on and so

did I. Met this one driving down the road 15' from my car.....I didn't get out!!!

I know everyone thinks of me as a city boy, but fact is my family owned property north of Parry Sound right into my thirties when Dad sold it for retirement income. Anyway I had a lot of experience with Black bears, been face to face with them on two occasions and close by on numerous. Of course you tense up and have to have your wits about you but generally they don't want any trouble with you and will mozie away. I became a student of the bear reading as many books and studies as I could after my first face to face encounter in late summer 1976.

Professor Herrero is the  authoritative source on bears, University of Calgary Prof. Emeritus but when I read his works he was still doing research and field work. The beasts that really scare me are the Bulls and Bucks.

A few years ago in Manitoba a black bear grabbed a guy by the leg and dragged him out of the outhouse! Thankfully his friend outside managed to scare the bear off or it could have been worse.

I think of that every time now when I'm there and in the outhouse...

I've seen cars on TV that have been totally destroyed by a bear looking for food.  They are powerful animals.

Here's some good info:  https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/bears.htm
