Anybody know expected cross border charges from Fed-Ex? - -UPDATE-

I want to purchase some items from the U.S. and the company who is selling the

parts uses Fed-Ex....I know,I know Fed-Ex sucks, but this place has all the parts I need in one place.

Other places only have one or two items and that would amount to multiple shipping charges.

My parts will cost $333.00 U.S. and Fed-Ex is charging $53.00 U.S. to bring it here.

No mention about duties and border charges, but you can bet there will be some when they knock on the door.

I can't find any information on what those charges would amount to.

Anyone know what I could expect to pay for border taxes?

Any information will be appreciated.

Is 53 the shipping cost? And was it fedex standard, ground, or express? If it was standard/ground. I wouldnt be surprised if it was around $80-100..

My experience with Fed-Ex has always been up front charges with no surprises at the door. UPS on the other hand has been full of unpleasant surprises at the door. Fed-Ex charges a set rate or percentage. UPS charges seem discretionary.

Ups and fedex are both jokes.

Below is from the fedex website. Thats just the clearance fee! The clearance entry fee covers these processes and is billed along with duties and taxes.

Clearance Entry Fee Options

Take advantage of lower clearance entry fees (CEF)* when you use the FedEx International Ground brokerage-inclusive option. As your broker, we arrange for clearance services, check the Commercial Invoice and complete entry preparation procedures required by the U.S. or Canada. These procedures can include the calculation of applicable duties and taxes for each type of commodity included in the shipment. The clearance entry fee covers these processes and is billed along with duties and taxes.

You have the flexibility to bill the duties, taxes and CEF to the shipper, recipient or a third party. If the shipper or a third party is not selected, the duties, taxes and CEF will automatically be billed to the recipient.

Says on the order - $53 is Fed-ex International Economy.

So from the chart you supplied Mike it looks like my total bill of $333.00 U.S. gets converted into Canadian money and that

becomes $442.00 Canadian including the Fedex Shipping charge....so there would be an additional $45.35 plus GST. to contend with.

Correct. But they also might tack on another fee as well. Duty fee too, whatever that would be... in the above it says thats just the clearance fee, plus additional taxes and duties apply too....

To add, Heres a duty and tax calculator as well. So that, plus the clearance fee, I would assume is what you are looking at approximately paying...

SO I did the calculator and that came to $49.95......so it looks like I

have to pay $50.00 duty and GST plus the 45.00 Fedex clearance fee......$100.00 over the total shipping cost.....hmm

Seems the rip off here is the $45.00 Fedex clearance cost.hmmhmm

Seems about accurate... lets wait and see when you get the package. Keep us updated, if that was the amount paid around or if it differed a lot..

i just know that with either fedex ground or UPS. Theres a lot of fees tacked on...

I haven't ordered it,but I think I have to bite the bullet and do it.....

All final parts I need for the 4 speed conversion, console plate, shifter arm, reverse switch, all stuff to make the conversion look factory.

I had this info at one time, but no idea where it is. If I recall, the parcel may show up at your door, but you'll get a bill later from FedEx (or the company they use) for the customs clearance fees, duty & taxes. Their fee structure was similar to UPS, where they bill you for what they lay out, and add a bunch of fees onto it.

You don't state in your bio where exactly you live but this may be another one of those cases where the use of a mailbox just across the border could be of financial benefit.

He's in Calgary.  Mailbox places in Montana are a 3 hour drive for us, so could be cost prohibitive.

When I deal with anyone besides Summit I have stuff sent to a Parcel Service just south of the border and run down to pick it up. Just pay taxes at the border and once in a while if the value of goods is less than $300 they just wave me through.

Summit avoids the brokerage fee and some of the tax somehow, with Fed-Ex, shipping from Ontario. Not worth the hassle to go south to pick it up!

Rockauto uses fedex, no large cross border fees. Ive paid gst to fedex but very rarely been billed later for any fees. UPS fees are way off the scale, always, in my experience.

With fedex, it appears the large shippers get their fees included at time of order, as rockauto do.

Greaser, let us know what you end up paying and well need pics of the new parts installed too.

A little off topic but Ebay is now charging taxes no matter what state you order from. We then pay taxes on those taxes. Canadian government removed paying taxes on shipping a number of years back, hope they do the same thing here on the US taxes

RE: Anybody know expected cross border charges from Fed-Ex? - -UPDATE-

Package arrived this morning at 10:00 A.M.

(That was fast)

I needed to pay an additional $22.46 ($10.00 of it was Fedex service charge.)

More charges coming from CRA ? , I don't know.

I'm very happy with the whole process.....except of course the value of our Loonie.

Order was placed with Hubbard Impala Parts https://www.impalaparts.com/

located in North Carolina. nice outfit to deal with.

Does the FedEx invoice indicate what the remaining$12.46 is for? It's not enough to be GST on a $300+ item.

 Shhhhhhhhh - Clint,not so loud........

The rest is listed under GST and it said Fedex will remit it on my behalf.....

That's why I ask if more charges will come from CRA....(or not)

Hopefully the CRA will be too busy looking for real cash in the off shore Panama papers instead.
