Sea Foam

I when should you put it in...

before an oil change or after.

My Hyundia has 216000 km and found that it was down a quart.

Have never added oil and changed at 6000 intervals.

Cliff,

From the directions on the can that works for me, I put it in before an oil change,

drive about 150 miles with it in the old oil and then do the oil change (when the engine cools down)

I have a friend with a classic car (summer driver) who does this before his final oil change in the fall.

What exactly does the sea foam do?  I've heard about people using it for years, so it's obviously beneficial, but have never really understood what it actually does.  Anybody have info, technical or otherwise?

What does seafoam do to an engine?

Sea Foam is specially formulated to safely and slowly re-liquify gum, sludge, varnish and carbon deposits from the hard parts in your engine so they can be flushed out of the system. Sea Foam helps lubricate the moving parts, particularly in the fuel system.

Has been around forever and it works great.
For me it gets rid of the internal gunk in the engine and quiets noisy lifters.

Seafoam might be voodoo but I swear by it as did my father who used to treat his engines in the 50's and 60's with this stuff.

I use it at tune up time and after oil changes in the oil, tune up time the carb gets a drink. Seafoam quiets lifters so it really frees sticky lifters, its a top cleaner and carbon cleaner and friction reducer removing sludge from oil  The last time I used it my 454 was running bad, I changed the plugs and oil and then added Seafoam and the idle was actually running up as I poured it in the crankcase, that's how good it works, then of course cut back idle and adjusted mixture. It is good to pour in when storing the car or any small engine, it was originally developed for Marine use.

in my 69 350 I had changed the oil 2 x in a period of only a  month once just after I got it running after 30 + years than a couple weeks after removing the pan to check condition of bearings changed it again then it was running rough so decided to put Sea foam in I can say that after my first 2 oil changes my oil was very clean..after sea foam and just running the motor a day or so the oil was dark..so it must clean things up alot

I thought Marvel Mystery Oil was the ticket if you had a car burning oil?

Thanks for the info, guys.  Anybody know what it is?  Is it some kind of solvent?

When I first heard its name I thought of salt water and seaweed!  Obviously that isn't it.  So what happens to all this sludge that it removes?  It must not clog up oil pickup screens or passages when the sludge is released, or folks wouldn't use it.  What does it do to your oil when you add it?  Does it thin it out?

Marvel Mystery Oil is another one of those mysterious snake oil products that everybody uses, but I still know nothing about.

Also works great in fuel tank, will emulsify any water, cleans system, acts as a stabilizer too!!! I put it in 409 crankcase [130ml. to 5 US quarts] & had same results as RAY, engine picked up RPMS before I got the last bit in, & maybe might have freed up seized lifter over time??? I took that lifter apart yesterday & found a "chunk" of something" in it?? Also have found my "slight" hesitation!! Drove car with manual choke slightly out by mistake & it ran smooth so it's a "LEAN" situation, have adj. carb yesterday & will road test today with screwdriver in hand!!!

I thought Sea Foam was a fuel additive. Do they also have an oil additive?

Sounds like it's both.

I'm going to save some money and go harvest some for myself.  May as well take advantage of living on the coast.  I'll let you know how my engine runs afterwards...

Clint this stuff can go down the carb, be ready for a smoke show, in the gasoline, in the crankcase, in the transmission.

See the variants:

I use it in the fuel in my carbed motors, lawn mower, chain saw, snowblower, outboards, old cars, and once a year in my 2002 Tacoma, keeps them running nice. 2stroke and 4 stroke.

Was at a small engine shop yesterday, saw a can sitting on their work bench. Also acts as a fuel stabilizer and removes water from ethanol. Been using this for 20 years.

I tossed a bunch of it into the fuel of a 62 Strato Chief I just picked up. It probably wasn't cared for too well and for sure was running on 87 gas. After a bout 300 kms and it sitting all night when i started it the driveway looked like this. This is likely an extreme result because no doubt this engine was full of gunk.

My impala has been sitting for 2 years.

Is there such a thing as too much seafoam in the gas tank?

I think I have 3/4 tank now of old probably stale gas. Estimate 15 gallons.

Usually you can smell rotten gas, just remove the cap and have a short sniff. If it smells ok, either drive the car and burn it up or drain it and put it in your daily driver.
