Wow, what a day...

Winter storm warning for southern Manitoba, only a couple of inches of snow so far but it's that wet heavy crap.

Now about 10 minutes ago the power went out (rare for us in Manitoba to have power outages) and then came back on flashing. For about 3-4 minutes the lights would flash about every 1-2 seconds in perfect rhythm. I've never seen it do that before. And then suddenly it came back on totally normal.

Lots of highways, schools, businesses closed. It's gonna be a long one....

An extreme winter storm will pummel parts of southern Manitoba over the next couple of days.

The most intense winter storm conditions are expected for today and Friday night for the Red River Valley as a Colorado low draws closer and intensifies. The western half of the Red River Valley may be hit with an extraordinary amount of snow. Snowfall amounts for today and Friday night could exceed 50 cm particularly towards the Manitoba escarpment. Areas closer to the Red River, including the City of Winnipeg, could get between 10 and 25 cm of wet snow.

Very strong winds will accompany this heavy snow as well. Gusts of 70 to 80 km/h are forecast throughout southern Manitoba, and gusts over 100 km/h are possible off the Manitoba Lakes or in wind prone areas around the Riding Mountains. Travelling will become difficult if not impossible as the day wears on, with heavy, accumulating snow, strong winds and temperatures near zero resulting in treacherous conditions. The combination of heavy, wet snow and strong winds will likely result in downed trees and power lines.

Wow quite the country we live in. Guys tease me about living in Bring Cash BC but crossing the bridge at noon today after playing hockey there were numerous boats cruising Okanagan Lake. One even had an Albertan wake boarding behind it. Hopefully still a little while before we put the oldies away.

Easy now, you know your turn will come!

We lost power about 2 hours ago. The generator from the lake is here for the winter so we still have Wi-Fi and heat. Plus we have a propane heater going in the living room.

Looks like it could be a long road ahead without power. Manitoba Hydro website says they're swamped, no promise date for it to be restored. Bad part is, I'm going to have to find generator gas tomorrow, so I have to find an area with power so I can buy gas. Some nice neighbours have already offered to help with gas if needed though. They have a gas range and gas fireplace so they have no power worries.

Good luck Carl!

A tropical storm developed out of the blue today, passing by to the south over the next day.  Just some wind and rain for us, but temps will stay above 10 °C.  Nothing even close to what you're going through.

Looking at the satellite pic, you can see how your weather system is likely being affected by the tropical storm as the flow is all messed up:

I'm supposed to visit my sister in Nova Scotia for an early Thanksgiving dinner today. The 11:15 ferry was cancelled due to the weather. Hoping for the 1pm crossing!

Trees down everywhere throughout the city-almost wish I was in the tree business right now-you'd be busy for 2 months guaranteed. We had a big ash just miss the garage and numerous big branches( 8 inchers diameter) fall down in the lower area of our yard. Thank god I have a chainsaw-I am betting they are in short supply this morning around the city anywhere you go.

Thanks, it's all good. Generator made it through the night with the electric heater on, 21* in here when I woke up. Generator was still running but the tank was dry, must have been on fumes. Cleared the driveway, the street clearing I heard happen at 4:30 AM, ran out, got a tank of gen fuel and we'll keep on plugging. Running it right now to run the fridge and wi-fi (no data plans on our phones). Cleared some neighbourhood driveways, not much to do now but sit around and wait. Sounds like it could be another day yet, nobody is commmitting.

We have a new family from Africa (refugees) our church helped bring here just 2 weeks ago.... I'm on my way over there now with a car battery and an inverter so they can charge their phones. They know nobody here, so they are feeling a little bit helpless at this point. And without phones they can't even keep in touch with their sponsors to let them know how they are doing.

And just before I headed out to take them a battery the power came on, we are back in business. About 20 hours without. Better than I expected actually.

We are very lucky. You can see Morris down in the lower right hand corner. Look how much of an area is still without.
