And just before I headed out to take them a battery the power came on, we are back in business. About 20 hours without. Better than I expected actually.

Doesn't it make you feel like a weight is lifted off your shoulders! smile

We find power-outs a bit stressful after going through (2) winter 4 and 5 day outtages and the recent Dorian 5 day outtage ... but my wife and I know how to deal with them. We have all our "supplies" ready year round.

Generator made it through the night with the electric heater on, 21* in here when I woke up. Generator was still running but the tank was dry, must have been on fumes.

I always shut down the generator from first dark until first light. We just pile on extra blankets in bed (and having a cat with a 102 body temperature in bed helps also)biggrin.

I find the drone of the generator can really grate on your nerves- especially after day 3!

We are likely better prepared than most people in this area, and that's due to our off grid life at our lake cabin. Very few people here have (or need) generators because something like this is very rare for us.

It actually wasn't that bad for us. We used the generator sparingly during the day, relying on the propane heater. As far as running it at night, it's a really quiet unit. When we're lying in bed we couldn't even hear it running, partially maybe because of the little 750 watt heater with the fan that it was running. When I saw our next door neighbour yesterday if the generator noise had kept him awake he said he didn't even know we had a generator! Because of my wife's health issues it's pretty important that we keep our house at least 20* or she really pays the price. For my part I would just pile on the blankets too but that doesn't work as well for her.

What kind of generator to you have, Carl.  Sounds like a jewel!

It's a Honda E3000IS. Wonderful machine, we sure love it.

It spends the summer at the cabin. I extended the wire harness for the ignition switch and mounted the switch on the wall in the cabin. Hooked up a power door lock actuator to operate the choke. In the cabin I just flick the power lock switch up to set the choke, crank it and when it starts click the switch down to open the choke. So it's "remote" but not wireless.

Sounds like you have a great setup there!  Good stuff!

Yesterday, I spent the day beefing up our generator shed's "foundation". It blew over in the hurricane even though it contained the weight of (8) 20 litre cans of gas and the 6200 watt (about 150 lbs.) generator. It now has (4) 4 foot metal posts driven into the ground and a box metal cross brace system bolted into the shed.
