This is "Dave". Dave arrived on our front porch about 4 years ago as a kitten. At the time we were looking after a Mother and 3 daughters on our porch. The other stray cats were tamed up and homed leaving this guy to himself. Dave is a bit of a urban legend about where he came from and what he does. Apparently he lost his home due to a divorce. Chasing pests away from the neighbourhood is his specialty. Raccoons, mice and even was spotted going after a fox. Lately he has decided to become a friendly cat. He now loves to be held. One neighbor has now angerly accused Dave of stuff he doesn't do so Dave now lives in our shop for now. It's a good thing we took him in because the real villain (another black cat) has shown up today on that neighbor's lawn. He has partially litter trained already but he's not up to house standards yet. Dave does not like other cats so until we find something else for him, he will be the "Shop Cat" Dave also has a heated cat house that would go with him if anyone is interested.
I've heard that black cats are usually the last to be adopted, apparently because of superstitions about black cats (which seems crazy, but that's what I've heard).
We adopted a medium haired black cat about 7 years ago and he has become one of the family. We were not even thinking of getting a cat, but then we saw some SPCA kittens at the local pet store up for adoption. He seemed to like us more than all the other people there, ignoring them and only paying attention to us - I say now that he picked us - and seemed to have a very calm, affectionate demeanor right from the kitten stage. Then they asked my wife if she would like to hold him, and it was all over. The next day we were signing the papers, buying all the necessary cat stuff... litter box, carrier, scratchy posts, etc. Now we can't imagine life without him... funny, eh?
He has paid us back countless times over with all the amusement and affection that he bestows upon us. It continually amazes me how he seems to understand the situation and can read our body language, especially for things like visits to the vet, when he instinctually makes himself scarce just when it's time to go into the carrier (which we leave out in the same place... so I don't know where he gets his cues from). He actually responds to words as well, which I always thought cats didn't do. I find myself continually amazed at how he has adapted to our lives, even though at times he seems like a wild animal (when he goes into 'large pupil mode'... lol). Lots of fun for sure.
As a now-confirmed cat person (still like dogs too), thanks for looking after Dave!
We had a black cat named Taz (a.k.a Tazmanian Devil) for 12 years. She was a bit of a diva and was EXTREMELY smart. She didn't like to be yelled at or laughed at. Do either of those and you'd be hissed at.
This is Poncho, now aged 10 a.k.a "The $2000 stray" (because that's what he cost us in vet expenses when he first found us) doing what he does best. Took this tonight as our power was out thank to the Nor'easter that went through here.
I don't think he knows he is a cat. When I get home from work he runs to the door to greet me, follows me upstairs and we play for a bit. He has memorized the sound of my Lazyboy chair when I get up from it and no matter where he is he runs into the room to wrestle with me. That's his beanbag in the photo above. If I'm in the kitchen and about to walk into the living room he'll run ahead and crouch behind the beanbag to hide on me. He has no clue that I can see him. When I walk by the bean bag he'll run out and "scare me" lol. When we had our chickens he wanted to run around with them. We had to put a stop to it when we got the rooster..
He is the kindest, gentlest cat I've ever had. Not a mean bone in his body. When we play the claws rarely come out. I'll miss him the day he passes.
Junior Relaxer is my bud. He's not a shop cat or an outdoor cat (just a sucky house cat).
He is a rescue cat from the Humane Society, after being left malnourished and dehydrated in a apartment after the tenants took off. We nursed him back to health and he turned out to be a very sweet cat. 7 years old and still a kitten.

A friend of mine has somewhat adopted a black cat also. We just call it old cat. It actually belongs to a neighbour but has basically moved to my friends home. It still migrates between homes but there is a dog at the cats owners home and the cat now being 14 years old doesnt tolerate the dog anymore.
Just a note that if anyone (God forbid) contracts Covid-19 be sure to isolate yourselves also from your cats. They are highly susceptable to getting it. Even a couple of tigers in the Bronx Zoo have it.
My update is that our cat Junior passed away in November 2019. We will wait until all this Covid crap blows over before getting another rescue from The Humane Society.
