I knew a guy in high school who had a Mach1 '69 Mustang with a 351 in it, while his dad had a '67 or '68 Buick Wildcat.  He told me (I never saw it), that he and his dad traded motors - the Buick in the Mustang, and the Ford in the Buick.  Seemed like a lot of work to ruin 2 cars to me, but it was the early '80s and neither of those cars were particularly valuable at the time.  Again, I never actually saw it so maybe it was just high school bravado, but he seemed to have enough details right that it was plausible....  I used to hear of the odd engine swap based on stuff people had laying around rather than seeking out the best engine for the car... just weld up some mounts and go to 'er...

Here's another odd one, a '58 Chevy with a Pontiac 390 (389?) in it.  Kinda the opposite of a Canadian Pontiac... biggrin

In the 70s it was common to replace us Pontiac engines with Chevrolet engines. The us built engines were scarce and expensive. The shop that I worked for did a lot of oddball swaps to help out people. We put a 425 Olds engine in a Pontiac lemans, replacing the 350 Pontiac. The owner had a rotten Olds 98 and a mint lemans with a bad engine, hence the swap. Also put a 300 Buick in a Firebird, replacing the overhead cam 6, same story, one car with a good engine and one with a good body. Despite what people may say about the late seventies, the economy was not as good as now. Double digit interest rates and people walking away from their mortgages. We did stuff like this to help people out and keep the shop open.

When one thinks about it GM did the exact same thing in 1977 when the famous Oldsmobile with a Chevy engine lawsuit case hit the news. After this it became common practice at GM to mix up engines under their Corporate engine program when today for example a Chevy Caprice with an Oldsmobile 307 is coveted.

I noticed that 57 Pontiac with a Ford 460 engine for sale in Old Autos newspaper as well and was really miffed. Obviously not a GM guy to do such a thing. The oddest thing i ever saw was a 1955 Chevy with an early hemi (392). Just recently i saw a 1954 Merc with an early Caddy motor, a 390 Caddy i think. Each to his own i guess.

I love the truck but you can bury the goofy wheels and engine.

Yes. An early GM engine would have been great?

This guy went to some work to devalue his car, but it would be a good home for the 460...  I recall seeing it for sale before the attempt to make it a gasser, and it looked like somebody's 1960s hot rod - a complete car with some of the things guys did to their fifties cars back then to make it cool.  I liked it before the gasser conversion, though this has potential to be cool...

https://www.kijiji.ca/v-classic-cars/annapolis-valley/1957-ford-gasser-project-wheels-and-tires-no-engine-or-trans/1466456302

Put the 460 in this, then put that 327 you just bought in the Pontiac... biggrin
