It's funny how clearly a lot of that was staged! The oil can was empty when he turned it upside down to add oil!

Neat video. A service station near me had a hoist the same as in the video. Because there wasnt a guide pipe, when the car was in the air the mechanic could rotate the car on the hoist and drive the car out instead of backing out. Probably not recommended by the hoist manufacturer!
Another shop also had the hoist casing rupture due to rust, and the car came down quickly without warning, fortunately no one was seriously injured.

In one of the old service stations a buddy had, he parked a car over it at night but a valve must have been leaking by slightly as it was up in the air when he arrived in the morning!  I wasn't there, but he said it was a true story...

And gas at 34 cents a gallon.

I worked part time at B/A and Esso stations while going through school.. My parents bought me a 1952 Austin A40.

 this reminded me;
I have heard more bad than good about these single post(?) hoists;
My former boss nearly died when one unexpectedly came down - I'm pretty sure he was hospitalized...
I saw that hoist, and it sent a shiver down my spine!

True story;
Summer 1996, I didn't know that was an thing;
I ended up refilling my car infront of an autoparts place off Henderson Highway back in 1996 because I opened the cap, and to my utter surprise my Firebird's cooling system evacuated itself...
Thankfully I didn't get burnt!
Man did I ever feel like an idiot... and I was grateful that no one saw it.

 LOL... I think we've all experienced that at one time or another.  The luckiest of us didn't get burned and nobody was around to see... sounds like you can count yourself as one of the lucky ones. wink

Many years ago, the car we were in broke down about 20 or 30 km from home, so we did what teenagers did back then - we hitched a ride back home so we could get a tow truck out to pick it up (it was my buddy's Dad's car) - no cell phones, so what else do you do?  lol

This guy and his girlfriend picked us up in this old Ford van that they had been camping in.  Well, driving along the highway he pulled over and stopped, grabbed a jug of water and a rag, opened the hood, put the rag over the rad cap, and then twisted it and ran like hell!  Of course the radiator gushed like Old Faithful but the rag gave him about a 1 or 2 second time gap to get out of there.  Then he calmly poured the water in the rad, put the cap back on, closed the hood and we were off on our merry way.  I guess it had a coolant leak?  biggrin

Thanks for sharing, too bad we can't still buy gas for 34 cents a gallon. I remember walking to service station with a gallon can to get gas for the lawn more. My mother gave me a half dollar. The gallon of gas cost 48 cents and I was allowed to buy candy with what was left.
