Yes he is correct. But he semi cheated! He's middle-aged... He's just not one of the old geezers.

If you look in the last picture I posted you can see the little green ball. That thing floats up when the specific gravity is high enough and you can see that green when you look in the eye. The problem with those is it only shows the condition of that cell. You can have a bad cell in the battery and that eye can be  green! It was a sales gimmick.

Don't feel bad! I don't expect younger guys to know but I was hoping maybe someone would. If I'm remembering right this Delco feature was discontinued in the mid-to-later 70s batteries.

Can we make this a permanent game. With 5000 members it could get interesting.

Did this feature stop with the side post/ maintenance free batteries? I cant recall the first year for side post. Im guessing 73.for the trucks.

Carl, Delco might have discontinued that feature but my Ford Motorcraft battery in my 2012 F150 had a eye.  At least I think it was my F150 or could have been our 2013 Escape that my kids drive, but the point is these eyes are still being used today.

I know my mom's 72 Malibu had this eye and that was side post.

I've told this story here before but likely many haven't heard it.

I picked up this exact battery eye when I toured the Delco battery plant in Ontario.  It was part of a Canadian GM Parts Manager's convention I went to. As we were going through the plant I saw the big bin full of those eyes. I asked the tour guide if I could have one for a souvenir and he was happy to let me take one. Then I asked him if that eye really did only measure the specific gravity of the one cell and if it wasn't just a sales gimmick. His reply with a bit of a smile was "yes"...

LOL, I haven't had many over the years that I'd want to use it on but I will admit there's been a few since I started as a jobber counter guy in 1976.
