Early drag racers in certain classes used these early hydro's and they were called "Bang Shift Hydro's". Especially popular in the gasser classes. These cars generally put stick shift cars on the trailer early.

My grandpa owned his old '53 Cadillac as late as 1978. I remember that it had a 4-speed dual-range Hydramatic with 2 indicated ranges in Drive & 2 ranges in Low. Those old Hydros went into tanks & GMC 6x6 in WWII.
