almost $8,000 to cover rust repairs after Volkswagen refused to honor a 12-year corrosion warranty. (Submitted by Ranulph Hudston)

A 12 year rust warranty is a good deal if they cover it. I saw pics of the rust- it was pretty extensive (and common for cars that old out here)

Probably the reason why VW recently dropped their corrosion warranty to 7 years...

...figure out when most of their claims occur, and drop it below that level.

It was 12 years and unlimited kms until end of 2015 model year, after that it was 12 years and 250,000 kms. I used it on a 1998 and a 2003, both had over 300,000 kms on it. The 2003 had 3 or 4 trunk lids on it but no other work. The 98 had rockers repaired. Their warranty was by far the best in the industry and I never had a problem getting it from my dealer.
I have a 2015 now with unlimited km warranty for 12 years. I never rustproofed any of my vws btw.

The jettas had rotten front fenders for years.

Id guess a 7 year warranty is more in line with the marketplace but I like the 12 years and unlimited kms better........

My worst rust and warranty experience was my last new (and third)
Toyota, a 1984 Camry 26 months old, 2 months over the 24 month warranty. They told me what cliff to jump off.

Ladies and gentlemen,.................. after market yearly oil spray rust protection is the only way to go. The biggest laugh for me is that dumb ass electronic rust protection. Independent lab tests show it does not work. Oil it to death on a regular bases and put up with the mess for a while right after. My guy oils my car to death so bad that 3,4 and 5 months after he does it, i am still cleaning up the oily mess. Well better that than rust. Cheers.

If you are using used motor oil, like many guys do who use oil, it is supposedly very acidic and believed to eat body mount rubbers.

Glenn, i am not talking about using engine oil here. There are various rust killing specific oils out there that are designed for keeping your vehicle rust free. These oils tend to creep into tight spots and tend to cling as well. I have never heard of acidic oils unless the oil is very used engine oil and why would anyone want to use that in the first place. I myself would never use old used engine oil for many many many different reasons. Cheers.

I usually use Fluid Film on my vehicles however last year and this I used a similar product. I buy it in 5 gallon pails and apply it with my air powered sprayer. I currently use drive on ramps. I cant move for a day or two afterwards from climbing around underneath them. I'm looking forward to having a hoist to do this next year! I couldn't imagine spending big bucks for a new vehicle and not applying rustproofing on a yearly basis. My daily driver was 850 bucks and I rust proof it!

Transmission fluid,  the way to go.  trust me.   Mix in some chainsaw oil now and then just for kicks.  and use atleast 4 liters of ATF every 3 months all winter.

ATF will not eat mounts or rubber.  My studded tires are almost 10 years old and i ATF the crap out of my wheels too(and it gets all over my tires).  still look like new,  no softening.   Just trust me, you will find out come december first how i know.

I remember a customer that bought a Plymouth Volare station wagon brand new and it was eight months old and the dealer replaced both front fenders due to rust.

Also had a customer that sprayed his 69 nova from new with used motor oil every fall. The car didnt rust, but he did change the front subframe mounts about every five or six years due to the rubber deteriorating. The bushings just went soft and mushy. Still a lot cheaper than fixing rust.

I believe that was a design flaw with Volares and Aspens when they first came out.  I believe they actually had a recall for it.

Years ago a buddy of mine bought a '57 Ford from a guy who worked at the old CN roundhouse in Halifax.  Apparently he sprayed the car down everywhere in used oil (probably from the trains) and it was probably the only '57 Ford wagon left around here at the time...  I don't know if he had any issues with the rubber parts as he had the car before I knew him.

Edit: And I probably should mention that I have been using Krown for about a quarter of a century now.  I currently have 12 and 22 year old daily drivers that have been driven year round since new and neither of them has any visible rust on them, other than a little surface rust here and there on some underfloor suspension components.

About VWs... the guy in the article had $8000 of repairs paid by VW (after the court case) and previously had fenders and quarter panels replaced at 7 years - value not given, but it would have to be at least $4000 or $5000 worth of work.  A friend of mine has an old Passat wagon that VW paid about $8000 to repair rust on the tailgate, fenders, doors, etc.  Don had a bunch of repairs done to his VWs.

... I think it's safe to say that VW did not make much, or any, money on those cars.  Presumably it will balance out over the western provinces, where corrosion rates are less, and in the non-rustbelt areas of the US, but I can understand why they would want to reduce their warranty from 12 years to 7 years.  I would imagine that after the diesel scandal they are not flush with money these days...

I recently sold my 2010 Passat wagon. It came with a 12-year rust through warranty. VW was very good about replacing anything questionable on it. In 2017 I saw a bubble appear underneath a door handle & a bubble appear on the tailgate. VW replaced the entire door & tailgate with brand new, and they also felt there might be future issues with my hood (I saw no problems there). They even replaced my hood without asking. The Passat was more upscale than a Jetta or Golf and it came with more zinc-coated metal.

My new 2019 VW Golf Alltrack came standard with a 7-year rust warranty. I bumped it to 12 years.

Oil spray is the best, but make sure you don't mess up your warranty by doing it.
