"The Irishman"

If you have Netflix I highly recommend this movie. Not only is it a great account of Jimmy Hoffa's life (and a theory about his disappearance) it's cast with great actors and there's a lot of old cars in it.

Just be sure to set aside a little over 3 hours to watch it!

I watched it the other night and yes it's long ( 3.5 hours) , but I enjoyed it . Lots of big name actors who obviously wanted to be involved with Martin Scorsese "last" gangster movie .

If you want a flashback to the 60's and early 70's , this one's the best .   The political history mixed with the mob history is intriguing and does connect a few dots .

How's the language? One of the reasons I watch very few movies is I get sick of the cussing. Hollywood often gets carried away with it.

Yes, Todd, an interesting take on an old story. In addition to the old cars, I enjoyed the tunes. The half hour interview with the leading actors and producer was also interesting. The special effects used in the aging process did not bother me whatsoever, although seeing De Niro with blue eyes took a bit of getting used to. As far as language goes, it had the usual compilation of cuss words, not much different from what one hears in most movies. The violent scenes would likely bother some viewers too, but one has to remember the backdrop for this movie.

It was really good. Watched it last night and will Ill probably end up watching it again sometime this weekend.

I think Casino and Goodfellas had more cursing in it?...

I found they did a pretty good job with the placement of the old cars. Often you'll see the same background cars being used in multiple scenes. I didn't notice that as much. There is a scene with a nice 59 Pontiac (American).

Jimmy Hoffa has always been a very interesting character. He made a deal with the devil and then he had to pay for it. He did a lot of good for the average working stiff and then had to deal with the devil. He then had to pay for it.

That was a black 4 door sedan Star Chief.....pretty rare today.

Noticed a lot of the same old cars being used in several scenes, the blue 57 Ford being one and of course most cars in the scenes

are pristine. Back in those days the cars stayed nice for about 6 months and then never looked the same.

Just about all the movies do this but occasionally you'll see the cars beat up from wear and tear.

They screwed up the opening when Pesci meets DeNiro at the truck stop. DeNiro's truck is running bad

and Pesci leans down and says it's the timing chain and supposedly adjusts it.

There's no way he's adjusting a timing chain for many reasons and I'm pretty sure the old Chev stovebolt didn't have a timing

chain but rather was gear driven......if I'm not mistaken.

I caught that as well. Also the fact tha DeNiro somehow managed to start the truck still standing outside next to the engine!

Oh that's easy Todd, he must have had one of those new fangled remote starts.........no

Then there was the scene pushing the Checker cabs into the river and blowing up a bunch at a yard.

Sure hope they weren't real Checkers. The group going into the river were props I'm sure and the group

that got all blowed up was probably (hopefully) done with computer graphics.....cry

I thought the same thing when I saw all those Checkers being destroyed.

Speaking of Netflix is anyone having problems with the site buffering? We actually finally got high speed internet. All other streaming services are fine however since Friday we've had Netflix stop part way through a movie and start buffering and sometimes even stating the program is not available.

I finally saw the film today and loved it. I laughed out loud during the scene with Deniro and Pesci. Like Bernie said, the motor would have had timing gears, not timing chain. The funniest thing in that scene is Pesci fixing the "timing chain" without taking the motor apart. How could Scorcesse have allowed this goofiness. Other than that i really enjoyed the film especially watching all those many great actors. It is a given that seeing all those wonderful old cars was a joy.

George I doubt Scorsese would know the difference between a timing chain and a watch chain let alone timing gears.

Not a Pacino fan, thought they could have had someone better to play Hoffa (how about DeVito).

DeNiro and Pesci were very good except for that timing chain thing.....LOL...smile

No problems Todd. We just (last week) got the new Bell Hub 2000 and it is very fast, I think 2500 mbs.

We bought a fire stick at the Source to turn our 11 year old TV into a smart TV and so far everything has been great.

Our internet isn't that fast. 25mbs (our old system was 1.5-2!) . We also have the Firestick. They are great!

I agree about Pacino, he has done some good films but he is mostly annoying. He is annoying as Hoffa for sure but i can not see Devito as Hoffa because he is way too short. Cheers.

Any chance they meant to say ignition timing but said timing chain instead?

I've heard it's good, but a 3.5 hour movie is too long for me.

Mark, even if the character meant ignition timing and not timing chain. He like magic fixes the problem in three seconds with no tools what so ever. As great a director as Scorcese is, he is not a Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola is a detail fanatic and a real car guy himself. Cheers.
