Printed page magazine are now a thing of the past- David Freiburger

Today is a day weve all dreaded. With the exception of Motor Trend, Hot Rod, and Four Wheeler, TEN Publishing will cease the print products of its magazine brands. These titles will continue as web sites and social media accounts, and major investments are being made in digital, so the editors may keep their jobs to continue with that content. As a lifelong fan of print who made his career as a magazine editor, this is a devastating heartbreak of a daybut not a surprise. 19 magazines will stop being printed. This closure of print was not a decision made by the MotorTrend company. Also, this does not affect the MotorTrend app or online video.

Like you said it's not surprising. Look at what's happened with newspapers. If the internet ever crashes we're screwed.
Speaking of Motortrend on Demand, is anyone here a subscriber? Is it worth the cost? How is the streaming quality?

I must be really out of the loop, i already thought all this was a given. My only interest in reading automotive, is the automotive publications of the past. Hot Rod, Popular Hot Rodding, Car Craft, Motor Trend, Rod and Custom, CAR'S, Motor Life and magazines like that from the past. Reading more recent stuff on line, has no appeal to me what so ever.

I also have long struggled with finding interesting magazines at the news stand. I rarely buy one, not likely once a year. I just don't have the interest in the new stuff. I know, I know, the cars are faster, more nimble, more fuel efficient, more comfortable etc. but very few of them interest me. Yes I'm stuck in my youth when it comes to car interests...  Sometimes people forget that the cars today are the way they are only because of all the gruntwork that went into building them way back when, and those are the ones it's fun to read about!

At our summer cottage we have no electronics whatsoever. My reading is books/magazines only but 95% of what I read there is National Geographics, not even car related. Somehow travelling the world (by reading NG) appeals more to me at the lake than reading car magazines, although at home 95% of my reading is car related online.

Sad to see Muscle Car Review go away-those other ones had little content-on a lighter note I love and subscribe to Old Autos newspaper and Bone Stock Muscle Cars-another great Canadian publication!

The guy who used to work on our computer systems at work mused that if we are ever hit with a massive EMF (sunspot, etc.), historians of the future will notice that human activity seemed to stop in the 21st century, as after all the printed literature and photos switched up to digital, it is all fragile and easily erasable.  Seems a little dystopian to me, but not out of the realm of possibility.

On the plus side, if all the digital networks of the world suddenly ceased to function, think of all the free time we would have... biggrin

I'm actually a fan of printed literature.  Be it magazines or actual books, I prefer to read from the printed page than a lit screen, and I can't see that changing.

I also subscribe to Old Autos. They have an online subscription also that I tried and it just didnt do it for me. I guess I like the feel of the paper in my hands.

Yes, Old Auto's newspaper. A Canadian automotive publication that i have been reading since it started. Reading on my lap that is, with my lap top computer turned off. Cheers.

I Still buy and read about fifteen car mags a month.I've been doing my part to support it!

This was inevitable, just a matter of time. I'm surprised these mags lasted as long as they did as print products.

I will miss Musclecar Review but not the rest. My favorites of this group are already long gone, e.g. Pontiac Enthusiast and High Performance Pontiacs. However, I hope that the Hemmings publications or Collectible Automobile never go down this path. These are the only other mags I consistently buy. In fact I have every issue of the Collectible Automobile since they began publishing in 1984 and I'm missing only numbers 2-4 of Hemmings Muscle Machines.

But you do have to wonder if all print publications will ultimately become obsolete.

The Toronto Star looks like a small town newspaper, size-wise. It used to be the Saturday edition was thick enough that you could line a few stalls in a stable. Advertising revenue dictates the direction, and many now choose to promote their own business via the Internet. Bricks and mortar are suffering too!

I always preferred printed magazines, but it costs more to produce. I will buy Hemmings, Special Interest Autos and Muscle Car Review. I would buy Pontiac publications but they have vanished. That Bone Stock magazine appears to be digital-only going forward.

Space. I've got stacks of printed stuff, meanwhile you can put a lot of stuff onto a small drive or stick. Or the cloud. It is not good to put all your eggs in one basket though. What if we get another 5-day blackout like in 2005? Hard copies are masters. If the Internet goes down or is censored (you laugh) or a popular website disappears then off-the-grid tangible stuff is nice. I can't find Camaro Untold Secrets online anymore, but a hard copy would still be accessable. Or get turfed during a mad spring cleanup. Or get mashed by surly friends during a night of drinking. Etc.

Remember the days when a grand home possessed a library? People greeted face-to-face in the foyer. Now people are stuck in their smart phones, or so it seems.

Sadly I have to admit that David Freiburger is probably right. I will continue to buy stuff when I see it on the stands. Anybody remember Lichtman's in Yorkdale Mall? They had magazines from all over the world. And The World's Biggest Bookstore in downtown Toronto. They are history.

The old fat Saturday Star is greatly missed. We always picked up one at the marina when at the cottage. An all day and evening dock read.

I still like Hemmings Classic. It's worth the price imop. I'll buy a (thin) Car and Driver from time to time when I'm away, maybe a (thick) Hemmings guide, but thats about it.

Hemmings Classics, you can put them in the bathroom and be entertained for the duration. You can go back to even old issues and they really have some value. I have a stack I'me going through now.

But for sure, it's sad to see it all fading away as we grew up on them didn't we.

This has become one of my favourite reads, still printed on high quality glossy paper.  Hopefully it stays that way.

I agree, Musclecar Review was one of my subscriptions too, way back when. And Pontiac Enthusiast was easily my favourite magazine of all time. They did an amazing job.

I liked Super Chevy when Doug Marion was in command. Today he has hisself a web page.  www.dougmarion.net

In many ways chat rooms, message boards and so on have made easy access to information (some of which is true). People get their fix there. You know, when looking back they can run a show on Life Magazine and how it chronicled history. Do you think there will be any historical chronology of websites or the Internet? no  Maybe the Wayback Machine (or secretly permanently stored at an NSA facility under the desert). Or maybe a biographical YouTube video with a robot voice-over.

The Wayback Machine has a snapshot of Canadian Poncho taken in February 2008. Check it out. We had 205 members.

For me Hemmings magazine (with all the ads) is a must when flying somewhere......can read on the plane and in the hotels.

For Muscle car type car magazines I get my fix when my wife goes to the library, I get to read them there while waiting.

My all time must get and I have every copy with the exception of a half dozen is Collectible Automobiles.

They started up in 1985,come out 4 times a year, have no advertising but are pricey, but a wealth of information on almost every car built (mostly

North American) Quality printing and photographs.

Cam, when you mentioned Super Cheyy and Doug Marion, it brought back tons of Chevy memories. I still have a complete collection of Super Chevy magazine from 1978 to about 2001. I was a subscriber all those years and cherish all those magazines. I checked out Doug Marion's web site and enjoyed reading his amazing personal Chevy history. It was Super Chevy that taught me much of what i know about Chevy's. Cheers.

Agree that Super Chevy was in its heyday under Doug Marion and I bought it all the time back then. But I cant find it anywhere now and when I do see it its not worth buying.

As to print generally, its my favorite medium but we had to stop subscribing to our local newspaper because theres nothing of interest in it. Presumably to remain viable theyve stripped out most of the community content and filled it with regional stories, thereby making the demise of the publication at some point, almost certain.

Bone Stock is a good magazine with Canadian content. Many Canadian "Pontiacs" have been featured and Canadian Poncho has been mentioned.

I agree with that. Both of Terry's mags are very good. The muscle car one has tech articles on metalworking that are better than in most other mags I've read.

 Yep.

I have the first 80+ issues that I bought off KiJiJi, but when it came time to purchase back issues to catch up to present I found it a VERY pricey proposition.

I've bought every issue of CA on the news stand since Vol 1, Issue 1. It's been going now for 35 years. Hope it doesn't stop. It's the best collector car mag out there in my opinion.
