What I took from the article is the guy could only produce a few oil change receipts and that made it look like he'd gone 20k between changes.

Yes, I noticed he didn't seem to confirm or deny he had gone 20,000 km between changes, it was left a bit open endedconfuse

During my brief stint at a Hyundai dealership I dealt quite a bit with engines blowing. At that time we had to call head office in Toronto and get permission from a warranty rep to replace the engines. They always wanted oil change receipts and if a guy did his own oil changes they wanted reciepts to show the oil and filter being purchased.

I think that says it all, Todd.  I suspect your experience at other dealers did not involve the same level of blown engines.  If you look at the shear number of cases of Hyundai/Kia engine failures (and fires) in the media these days, the smoking gun should likely be found in the hands of the company, and not the owners...

Good idea to have documentation, I go to my mechanic's shop for oil changes during

warranty, and there is a record of all the oil changes (and I keep receipts as well).

I asked the dealership prior to doing this and they said mechanic documentation is valid for warranty.

Well with the new Kona EV Hyundai won't have to worry about a piston coming through the block!

Speaking of burning Hyundais, I recall reading about this one last March - about as scary an occurrence as you can imagine:

The fire started in a 2018 Hyundai Elantra parked in front of the house. (Paul Palmeter/CBC)

I would like to know what kind of manufacturing debris could remain in the engine and cause a failure after so many kilometres. I would like to know the type of failures that kills these engines. My wifes Kia has almost 90 k on it with no problems yet and is out of warranty at the end of the month and has the gdi engine.

IIRC Hyundai is saying preignition is the problem:

I had two Santa Fes and they were very good vehicles. One was 2007 , the other 2012. Lost both in collisions, neither our fault. Both had about 200k and still worked very well. We replaced the 2012 with a 2015 Kia Sorento because we couldnt find another Santa Fe that we liked. I hope that this one is as good.
A lot of vehicles have problems. Just read about a couple of new Silverados that caught fire. One was just driven off the lot and didnt make it home and the other blew flames out of the dash vents burning the drivers hands. When the time comes to replace my 2015 2500HD it will still be with another GM truck.

Actually Hyundai has had good vehicles. The Tucsons and older Elantras were also good. Like Paul says, every brand has their issues. I know that first hand working for GM, Chrysler and Toyota.
