Some tree species are at risk in NS due to bugs 'imported' from Asia...

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/hemlock-tree-woolly-adelgid-pest-nova-scotia-1.4392723

"Loss of hemlock trees can have a potential, major ecological impact. Hemlock in many forests serves as a foundation tree in the environment so what that means is that other species that live in those areas depend on hemlock for their existence," said Neville.

The tiny insect, less than 1.5 millimetres long, produces a wool-like wax to protect its eggs, which are usually deposited on the underside of hemlock needles at the tips of the branches.

"It's very tiny, it looks like a small cotton ball. And those develop over the winter and they're most obvious, basically, from January through to June," said Neville.

The pests are native to Asia and Neville said it's believed they first arrived in North America in the 1950s in the state of Virginia, spreading across the northeastern U.S.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/wood-restrictions-emerald-ash-borer-1.5080400

The emerald ash borer has already destroyed several trees since it was first found in DeWolfe Park in September 2018. Officials believe many more trees have been infected.

The emerald ash borer lays eggs on the bark of ash trees. When they hatch the larvae burrow into the trees and start eating the live tissue. That prevents sap and nutrients from moving between the branches and the roots, causing the tree to die.

The beetle has caused widespread damage in Ontario.

It was recently found in New Brunswick and as far away as Winnipeg.

so, you're saying green crabs are vegan? Spread that rumour and we might be able to eradicate them!  biggrin

Whenever I dive, or hear of someone diving in the Caribbean, one of the first things you hear is how widespread the invasive lionfish are. They are everywhere. I know dive shops have been hunting them relentlessly and promoting them as good eating (though it takes a little skill to not poison the consumer). So far, the lionfish are winning.

Too funny! We are lucky enough to live on acreage here in Gibsons B.C. and I am an avid gardener..Recent plagues here include the Mountain Ash Sawfly which was imported accidentally to the east coast way back and made its way west to Oregon and now North to us. Somehow we got the Viburnum Beetle which mows all of our "snowball" bushes. Flea Beetles showed up in my greenhouse not to mention complete infestations of leaf roller moths! and now, yes, these crazy giant wasps! I have not personally seen these but I'm certain they're coming. Also I am and have always been a bird nut. We have the Annas hummingbird here all year. This is now commonplace. When I was young..unheard of. We have been on summer water rationing here now for several years...whoda thunk that?! Sad state of the arc I'd say..I feel bad for my/our Grandkids.....

And don't forget, visit the Victoria Bug Zoo when you are downtown. No, I'm not being disparaging. It is a real place.

It's strange, but with the zebra mussels threatening local fish stocks, they have also cleared up the water in Lake Ontario. In satellite view you can now see deep into the water & see the submerged roads near the 1000 Islands from when they flooded the area in 1958 for the St. Lawrence Seaway.

I've been to the Bug Zoo.

On the documentary series "Canada On The Edge" they featured this submerged stretch of the St. Lawerence. Very cool!
