STOP - START technology

Heard on a TV auto shop the other day that GM will not let you disable the annoying Stop/Start feature.

The commentator said most other manufacturers have provided to disable stop/start but not GM.

Can anyone verify this?

Apparently you can't but there is a hack you can do that involves tricking the car into thinking the hood is open.

The one problem I see with the hood open trick is I am betting the remote starter on the key fob won't work then. If I am right, the hood, trunk and all doors have to show "closed" for the remote to work.

On one of the rental vehicles we've driven in the past couple of years (can't recall what it was, maybe a Hyundai?) I discovered if I came to a stop, then lifted off the brake pedal for a split second and pressed it again, it would stay running as long as I sat at the stop with my foot on the brake.

I should have added to my other post, when this system came out on GM's we did confirm with GM that it was not possible to block it out. I'm not sure if that is still the case today but it was when they introduced it.

All this tortured overkill is done to avoid the gas guzzler tax that GM would have to pay for missing the fleet corporate fuel economy.

My daily driver has it, but only if I select Economy mode (plus it is a manual trans). It would drive me mental, but if one were to try to wring out maximum mileage it might help in some small way. Cars with it only have to tick over the slightest amount to start, as the system knows where TDC is for the next cylinder to fire.

Interesting technology, but really forced on us...

Super annoying feature...my father in laws 16 Malibu has this, but it can be overcome by simply easing way up off the brake pedal at a stop. But the thing that bugs me more is the car already gets outstanding fuel mileage (6.8/100 highway), and there is absolutely no need to shut off at a stop. It's such a dumb thing. Put it in a white van, not a 4 cylinder Eco car for god sake. And there appears to be no opt out on this Chevy, I've looked.

Many of the new cars shut off their engine when you stop at a traffic light.

The engine turns off at a stop, and restarts when you hit the gas.

Also requires a second battery.

About 5 years ago the GM dealer loaned me a new Impala. At the first light I said oh crap the car just died.

As I lifted my foot it started.......headed back to the dealer to tell them and I guess they laughed -  got another one.

Go walking in town and stand at stop light and you may here the odd car start up when the light turns green.

Most annoying feature ever, especially for anyone who survived the years of running beaters as a kid, back when if they stalled, you might not have enough battery to start it again!

Many cars have the option to turn it off, which I do anytime I drive one - no experience with newer GMs though.

I am trying so hard to grasp the worth of this feature on many of today's cars. What real savings is there when you consider that you will be wearing out starters and batteries more than normal. I would never own a vehicle with this nonsense on it. What crap. bleh

I rented a Grande Cherokee with this feature. It drove me nuts for 5 days. When I returned the rental, the guy behind the counter asked me if everything was alright with the rental, and I told him I hated the "stop/start crap". He then told me after I've rented their vehicle, that you could shut it off.furious

I found that a few times the vehicle would shutter/bog during acceleration at a traffic light ... I hated it!

Agree George....I try to own all GM but this is a deal breaker and we may be looking for something new in 2020.

I could see it being of good value in a constantly stopping and starting delivery van, but in a regular car with an economical engine...just dumb.

Probably makes sense for those who live in big-city gridlock, like New York or LA, but for the rest of us?  Just an annoyance.

I was in a traffic jam in Toronto awhile ago. Beside me was a Mercedes with the stop/start system. After crawling along for about twenty minutes the Mercedes probably shut of and restarted about twenty times. I had my window down and the starter was sounding pretty bad. After the traffic cleared I was wondering how long the starter would last with the stop/start feature.
