The way they wailed on that car it is astonishing to think that a future buyer would willingly be getting a re-bodied car. For that kind of money?

all you have to do is watch the movie to realize that car is BEAT wasnt it recently found in a junkyard somewhere?just the 12 percent tax on the car would kill an average guy

There were two cars used in the movie. The car Steve McQueen drove that just sold for 3.4 million and the stunt car used for the jumps and parts of the chase scenes. The stunt car was sold for scrap as it was deemed too severely damaged to sell. It ended up in Mexico and was found in a wrecking yard but had been stripped and was just a shell when found. It was identified by the VIN number. I am sure that the value of the car found in Mexico just went way up.

Yes, the one that just sold was used by the seller's dad as a daily driver. In fact the guys wife used to take it every weekend to music lessons until the clutch went out in 1980. Then it was parked.

Sounds like somebody had fun with it somewhere in the shipping system.  There's no way it makes it out of the factory like that.

It would be nice to know the history behind the Facebook video. A friend of mine works at the local ford dealer and a supercharged F150 was in for a warranty engine. The owner had it for about a week, Ford covered it under warranty. The supercharger was dealer installed on the truck. No questions asked. Paul

Yeah, I always say give me a couple of days with any vehicle and I can destroy it for you if I try hard enough.  The guys in the video snickering about the name of the person who signed off on the engine was enough for me.  Idiots.

They had estimated it'd sell for around 3 million. Can't really blame the guy for selling. It was his dad's car and there'd be a lot of stress owning such an iconic car.

Good point, Todd.  I think in his shoes I'd sell the car and then build a replica at a fraction of the price.  Wouldn't be the same as owning the original, but then you wouldn't be afraid to drive it either...

Also the timing to sell was perfect. In 10-20 years the car may not seem as "iconic" as the younger folks likely don't know much about Steve McQueen or the movie. I also read it might be harder for the current owner to ever sell for that price as the car already has already been on tour for a couple of years so that possible cash cow is gone.

A whole lot of fuss over a rusty mustang "Ruststang". I think i prefer my shinny, clean, no rust, practical and affordable vintage car. I will leave these 3.4 million dollar rusty's to crazy rich guys that think they are cool for owning a piece of "Cool". Imagine if Steve was not a part of this picture. The car would be a no sale at $8,000. confuse

I am left wondering what comments would have been made had this legendary movie starring a legendary actor and a legendary car been made with a different make of car and a different actor? If you think these numbers are absurd, you should have been at Barrett Jackson this week!

Darryl, thanks for the offer. If the truth be known, I have owned my fair share of Mustangs including a 1971, 1974, 1982, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2008, and currently, my 2013. In addition to my original owner 1976 Mercury Cougar XR7 which I still have, I had 1988, 1990 and 1997 Cougars. My '64 CS has been the outcast in my garage since 1975. I know that 45 years is a lengthy period of time to keep a car, but, then again, I have owned my Merc for 44 years. Those of you who have read the September, 2016 Feature Car story on this site may well remember that the only reason I own my '64 CS is because of my cousin, Leslie. My life-long infatuation with Fords began with my first Ford in 1971. Although I have several thousands of dollars and a certain degree of sentiment invested in my CS, I would seriously consider selling it in order to purchase my absolute all time dream car, a 1957 E-code Thunderbird. In addition to this site, I belong to a Mustang, Cougar, and Ford site. I do admit that I enjoy all 4 sites. Perhaps this is a bit or a ramble, but it is my story.

Many may not know what an E-Bird is.......had 1 in my shop a few years back(just before starting the Canso). Cool cars..think it was a 312 with twin Holley carbs(not a F%$d guy)!! Not going to name names..but a pro shop that butchered the car!! Will see if I can dig up some pics. Cool and unique cars!

LOL!  I get the feeling 'we' would be gushing over it if the car chosen for the movie had been a Camaro SS or Z/28...

In the end it's just movie memorabilia, not a car per se.  People who pay hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars for movie cars, or famous props or outfits, etc., have more money than they know what to do with, anyhow.  Most of us are would love to have that much money, but have no concept of what it would be like (I know I don't).

You always get a certain percentage of the population that will view this as a negative, and then others who will just find it interesting and not comment negatively about it.  Personally, it makes no difference to me what others spend their money on, I'm just glad that an iconic car from a movie that is said to have the best chase scene ever... still survives.

Here's a great story about the filming of the car chase...  https://www.motortrend.com/news/bullitt/

There is now $3.4 millionUS in the sellers hands and that is good for the economy, some of that money will be spent and not sit rusting away in a bank or the stock market. The people who bought the car wont miss the money.

I believe there were two "hero cars"... this one that remained in good condition and another that was a basket case and is getting restored. Selling this $10k car now for north of $3m was a no brainer... it won't be long before there will be no one living who cares who Steve McQueen was... I'm pretty old, into muscle cars and have never seen the movie or know of him... other than from American Pickers, etc. For myself, I would have rather bought 30-40 rare muscle cars at the auction than this one car. I wouldn't be surprised if the mustang is used at as attraction to make some money back. ak

It is still my favourite car chase scene movie, it is worth seeing, considering how old it is. No computers involved, will make your stomach queasy on those hills.

Agree. No matter how many times I watch it, it's still exciting. Not only the chase, but all the neat cars in the background.

I guess the family who owned the Mustang are glad their Dad didn't sell it back to Steve McQueen when he was looking to buy it in the late 70s for a few thousand dollars.
