Old cars---one thing leads to another....

Some of you will have seen when I posted in the fall that I installed an NOS 70's vintage cruise control kit in 68Grande's car. I really liked that kit, bought my own NOS cruise kit and decided the other night to start installing it. First thing I wanted to do was install the sensor and magnet on the driveshaft. I went under there to do that and noticed the exhaust system on there that I've never liked since I got the car (even though it's basically brand new). It has an X-pipe and that stupid thing is always in the way when I'm working on anything transmission/shifter related stuff. I could never just drop the exhaust to work on it because the whole system was welded together.

So.............before I install the sensor I decide to eliminate the X-pipe. I don't like the sound of it anyway, it's too smooth. I like the old school dual exhaust musclecar sound with no H or X pipe to smooth it out. Plus one front pipe hung lower than I liked.

Now that I'm almost ready to put the exhaust back up there I'm thinking "Hmmm, this would be a great time to swap over the clutch/flywheel/starter to the big setup with the exhaust removed". When I put the 427 in I just used all the 283 stuff on it. So installing a little sensor that is a total of 3 bolts for mounting the bracket and sensor is now----

-A complete exhaust revamp (because the whole system was welded together)

-A complete clutch/flywheel/starter replacement

-A different Muncie with right hand side speedometer gear and the corresponding longer speedometer cable will go back in.  I will finally have the correct speedometer cable routing for a factory 4 speed car across the firewall.

All this because I decided to mount a little 2 wire sensor under the car when I had a spare 1/2 hour one night.

I'm sure this has never happened to anyone else here....no

I'm not a fan of a exhaust X pipe either. I run chamber pipe exhaust, sure has it's own sound.

Why are we always so naive that we approach a small project thinking it will be simple?!

You know as well as all of us Carl. Going under the car to do a "job" is just an excuse to have a better look at what else you could dream about before going to bed at night.

That was supposed to be an animated gif of several onion layers being exposed.

Your "little" project reminds me of the story about Nail Soup. You know the one where you can make a pot of soup out of a single nail & some water. Of course if you want to make it better just add carrots, potatoes, celery, a little beef broth, season to taste. Don't forget to pull out that amazing magic nail when you are done.

There almost always is more we can do to our old cars.
