78 C10 Silverado Steering Column Paint

I purchased a sun baked 78 Silverado out of Arizona in December which is my next and on going project.  I realize that CP specializes in Canadian Pontiacs but I also know there are lots of folks on here with tons of experience, so here goes!

I purchased a tilt steering column locally for the 78 that I am currently refurbishing, and I am getting close to painting the column black.  So, the big question is, does anyone have any opinions on the type in terms of flat or satin and brand of black paint to use?

I have read that different folks have used just about everything from Rustoleum to Tremclad and everything in between.  Most I have read about used primer first over a prepared surface and give it a wet sand and then apply the paint then a shot of clear.  So, I am hoping that someone on CP can recommend a brand of paint and give me any other advice or share their experience.

Thx, Jake

If i am correct, it is a semi/satin black.  that would be the factory correct look,  not totally flat.

There are a few things to try.

First is SEM trim black.  it might have a very very slight orange peel, but so did the original column.  SEM trim black is a very durable product and sticks great,  Rondex has thier house brand of it too that works good.  sem would be my first recomdendation

Second, you can go with good old Krylon semi gloss,  has just about the perfect reproduction shine,  a bit watery so i would recommend buying one can of flat and use it as a basecoat, then build up the layers with the semigloss.  Its Krylon, so not a professional product, but i have had great luck with it for durability, especially for underhood or interior stuff that is out of the elements.

Primer only needed if bare metal,  you could just get away with a light coat of etch prime over the sanded smooth bare metal,  if the existing finish is still in good shape with no bare spots, just sand and paint directly over the existing finish

A big NO to any other canadian tire or home depot sraybombs,  no tremclad or rustolium, just bad news.  I wouldnt mess around with gloss black and then applying a semigloss clearcoat, too much hassel, just use a single stage semi gloss to begin with.

I have a few cans of the SEM trim and the rondex stuff if you want to try some.  I have been painting some of my interior parts with it on the wagon,  you are welcome to come by and check out the finish if you like.

How about some 2k satin black in a can?

Would be super durable.

That is a good product too, i used the clear alot at the body shop.  good stuff for small jobs.  only problem is once activated you gotta use it up.  Also expensive option, and yeilds the same results as SEM trim.  Might also be harder to find in wpg.

Pricey for sure. I think it's about 45 bucks a can. But you can't beat it for durability and ease of use.

Should certainly be available at the cornerstone Rondex in Wpg. I saw it at the Rondex in Hamilton this morning.

This is good feedback Dave and Mark. Thanks for chiming in!

I will put my rattle can of Tremclad back on the shelf......

Looks like Rondex has both products so I will have to toss a coin to decide which one to use.

If you do use the SprayMax Jake, let us know how it goes. Never used it, but I have a can of 2k Satin clear waiting to be used. I would think it's all of a very high quality being made in Germany.

And make sure you line up some other satin black jobs at the same time. I think a can will go quite a way, and you only have so many days after you break the seal.

I've used the 2k clear in a spray can. Nice product but you have to wear a proper fresh air respirator. There's isocyanates in that stuff and a regular respirator will not block them.
