According to General Motors' press release, Rick Hendrick placed the winning bid before the hammer fell.
He's the founder and CEO of Hendrick Companies.
Rick Hendrick net worth:
Rick Hendrick is an American businessman and entrepreneur
who has a net worthof $1 billion dollars.
Joseph Riddick Hendrick III was born in Warrenton, North Carolina in July 1949.
Hendrick Automotive Group is the nation's largest privately held automotive dealership group and the sixth-largest automotive dealership group overall,
based on 2015 units sold, according to Automotive News "Top 125 Dealerships Groups."
In 2015, Hendrick Automotive retail sales exceeded 198,000 vehicles and $8.4 billion in revenue.
More than 1.98 million vehicles were serviced by Hendrick Automotive Group technicians.
The journey started in 1976, when a 26-year-old Rick Hendrick took a chance by selling off his assets to purchase a struggling franchise in Bennettsville, South Carolina,
thus becoming the youngest Chevrolet dealer in the United States. Bennettsville's success was a precursor to Hendrick Automotive Group, located in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Today, the company operates 97 dealerships representing 29 nameplates, 131 franchises, 30 collision centers and four accessories distributor installers in 14 states:
Alabama, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
More than 10,000 people are employed by Hendrick Automotive Group.
Hendrick Automotive Group offers new and pre-owned vehicles, financing, warranties, automobile parts, accessories, service and body repair.
The company has contributed significantly to improve the quality of life for people in need through charitable contributions.
Chairman Rick Hendrick also founded Hendrick Motorsports, which has earned a record 11 car owner championships in NASCAR's premier division, the Sprint Cup Series.
I wonder if the buyer gets to write off the whole amount or is there some sort of appraisal on the car that he has to deduct from the charitable donation?
Good question Todd, but I don't think he's "hurtin" after looking at net worth. Take a look at the car cause "nobody" will see it again till he re sells it later down the road!!! Parked in his collection.

LOL... where's all the outrage at paying $3 million for a car that you will essentially be able to buy at a dealership for under $100K?
Of course Rick Hendrick has a ton of money, and you have to admire his success and all of his philanthropy. Not to mention the success of his NASCAR teams over the years. Nice to see that the money is being donated to a good cause.
It may seem loony to pay that much for a car you can buy for much less off the showroom floor but the upside is that the proceeds go to charity so that's a good thing in my books. And I'm sure the buyer won't miss it. I've been to his race shop/museum in North Carolina, and have seen all the dealerships in the Charlotte area with his name on them. Besides, it's VIN 1 so it will retain some collector value into the future.
3 mil for this and some nut case just spent over 3 mil for a rusty ruststang. What is this crazy world coming to. I will tell you what this crazy world is coming to............................................. A whole lot of nothing............................. that really means anything. Cheers.

Giving to a charity is great, but there's no way would I want to own a newer 'Vette. I haven't liked Corvette styling for decades now. The engineering is a different thing, but the styling ... If I had the 3 million, I would just donate it straight up, rather than own ugly.

Imagine if it was a real oddball price like $3,456,123.98.
Off topic; Phil, have you been affected by the bushfires in any way?

No mate, thanks for asking. Just heaps of smoke. We have some rain finally. Australia is pretty big. overlay oz on a US map and it is nearly the same size, and texans think they have wide open spaces. We are just south of brisbane, queensland. New south wales and victoria really Copped it hard. Absolutely devastating. Nice to see you called them bushfires not wildfires. We are going to feel it in the supermarket. Floods, severe drought, now bushfires. Such extremes. Cyclones havent started yet.

Man, it's been a rough go for Australians. From the news reports it's hard for us Canadians to get a sense of how much of the country is being affected by the fires, but from all accounts it is devastating in the amount of wildlife that has perished, as well as the human costs.
As you alluded to, the drought, as well as the fires, must be having a huge effect on farming, and thus your food chain.

Stay tough! Hopefully it gets better soon.
x2. We've mostly heard stories about the loss of wildlife (primarily about the Koalas), but not the human strife.
