Manitoba ethanol fuel increased %

Remember guys, NO politics on CP!

But this is not good news for us old car guys....

NO politics! Let's keep the discussion focused on the ethanol portion of the article.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Premier Brian Pallister has announced that Manitoba is increasing the minimum amount of ethanol in fuels by as much as two-and-a-half times the current amount.

The Government of Manitoba says the new plan will reduce Manitobas emissions by almost 400,000 tonnes in five years, the equivalent of 100,000 cars being taken off the road.

"We have the cleanest electricity in Canada already and soon we will have the cleanest fuels in Canada too," said Pallister. "Manitoba is leading the country once again."

This announcement comes after sharing the province's plans with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Monday.

The province's plan is to increase ethanol levels in gasoline from 8.5% to 10% and in diesel from 2% to 5%.

Ethanol comes from starch-based plants, primarily corn, and is a second energy source in gasoline. This type of energy has a lower impact on the environment when it is created and used, but too much can damage engines. Most vehicles can handle up to 15% ethanol content, which is five percent more than the proposed raise.

The Government of Manitoba says this new commitment will help the province reach proposed goals in the Made-in-Manitoba Climate and Green Plan.

Other proposed initiatives in the Made-in-Manitoba Climate and Green Plan include watershed management strategies, investment in hydroelectricity, and fuel-efficiency measures for the trucking industry.

I'm not sure how much overall benefit they will actually achieve, as ethanol contains about one third less energy content than gasoline, which will result in a drop in fuel economy.  That, combined with using a food source for fuel, makes me wonder if it's good judgement.

And of course, it's also like they are thumbing their noses at anybody who runs an old car which will suffer the corrosive effects of ethanol in their fuel system.

I imagine they don't really care much, though, as the current goal of most governments is to convert the world to electric cars anyhow.  If some of the urbanists had their way, none of us would be driving cars anyhow...

Here in Ontario ESSO has switched it "high test" to NON ETHANOL as a lot of "New" vehicles require this or Warranty VOID !! Same goes with most garden equipment power Generators,chain saws etc. Shell V-Plus is Ethanol free & have no plans to change. Last week I got 2 jugs of high test at local reserve & tested it for this "crap" & it tested "clean" so they haven't switched "yet" though rumors are flying, that they will, but it's up to their fuel suppliers, BUT station has been getting questions daily from customers if it's still" clean" fuel, so hopefully those questions will be passed on to owner. I've said to them," switch over & I'm gone" !!!!! Filled up Yukon with this clean fuel & mileage has gone up quite a bit?????

Regular gas in Ontario has been 10% for years. Hi test was zero ethanol, but some places are saying up to 10% lately. I run hi test in my Pontiac and havent had any trouble. Some people have had problems with some of the neoprene in the fuel system deteriorating when using regular. I heard of someone in our club having the fill hose on the gas tank deteriorating and the pieces plugging up the fuel system.

Think I posted this before but again, one of my car club members had the fuel bowls on his Holley Carb become "Holy" as ethanol ate the bowls right through, he was lucky he didn't lose the 30 Ford Vicky sedan to a FIRE!!! Some CTC stations are "clean" but you have to ask even after reading pump, [ believe they use ESSO] Fuel pump diaphragms, internal carb. seals & gaskets, fuel lines are all susceptible to damage & failure from this $hit" but falls on deaf ears @ Gov. level.

 This is true. I am always suspicious of these programs since it is about creating a "crisis" then offering the "solution".

Junk science, poorly thought through.

Who do we go to when our representatives do nothing to prevent this nonsense?

I am going to recuse myself from delving further into this nightmare since we want to avoid going into the obvious cause of this "problem".

I hate ethanol, it is a very highly subsidized product and producers are losing money, even after subsidies. I thought many us states have been trying to reduce or eliminate ethanol.

Jon at the carburetor shop in Missouri sells carb kits with leather accelerator pumps, he either makes them or has them made. Leather is the only material Ive seen that is ethanol resistant. Ive had the same one in my afb since 2006 or so.

Certainly an interesting debate. Thought I had heard somewhere that ethanol production resulted in more emissions than it saved on the automobile emission side. I just Googled it and found this interesting article vittana.org/11-advantages-and-disadvantages-of-ethanol Change is coming for sure, hopefully they will find a way to reduce the impact on the old car industry.

what I really don't get is this:

if ethanol blended fuel burns at the same rate as regular fuel, this all seems like a good idea... to a point
that point being where farmers switch over to corn ect for ethanol production, and it ends up costing the average consumer more to get their grains & vegitables.
Also, ethanol blended gas requires a different air to fuel ratio, one which is notably richer - so even though these vehicles are now burning "greener" gas, they re burning MORE of it!?

You have to be very careful where you buy gas, as most brands will put ethanol in ALL grades of gas;
I have long understood that Esso and Shell are the most dependable to NOT use ethanol in their premium gas;
Just know that Esso does in fact do ethanol blends in many premium pumps - so you need to be vigilant about knowing what's in the fuel tank you are about to put into your car.
Shell seems to be the best, last I checked you could use their own website to verify if a station has true ethanol free gas (iirc last time I checked there were two stations in Alberta which used ethanol in their premium tanks.

Shell has actually packed up, and left some regions of the United States where ethanol was being forced to be used.
