I love it. '60 - '66 GMCs are my favourite.

Mine too... though I like Chevys of that era just as much (mostly '60 - '62).

Uh oh... I'm starting to agree with Darryl... no

Hey, and it's a Canadian GMC. I think '63 marked the switch from torsion bar suspension to coil springs. It was also the 1st use of the new inline six.

Was the GMC 305 CID v6 ever offered in the Canadian market trucks? Or did they all come with the 261 inline 6 prior to 63?.

make a good pei truck Darryl, go for it. A good set of chains and a big load on the back and you could plow snow with that.

I recall seeing trucks with that V6 on the hood but they must have been imports. My uncle had a 63 GMC short box 1/2 ton and it had the straight 6.

I was at a cruise night last summer and there was a 1967-72 gmc at the show with a 351 v6. I think it was a Texas import. I was looking under the hood at this huge engine and seem to remember that the truck chassis was much different in the front crossmember area in that it looked much stronger than the Chevy and the frame seemed to kick up much more than the Chevy also. As it was getting dark I couldnt get a picture. By the size of that engine it must be much heavier than a Chevy v8. Has anyone seen under the hood of one of the US built gmc pickups to confirm what I saw? If the truck comes to cruise again I will try to get pictures.

Thanks

Based on the below info, I don't think I ever saw one of these engines in a GMC and they must have been US only or we would have seen one somewhere?

According to Wiki:

From 1939 to 1974 GMC had its own line of six-cylinder engines, first the inline sixes known as "Jimmy's" from 1939 to 1959, and then their own V6 from 1960 until 1974, of which a V8 and a V12 version also existed. Additionally, from 1955 through 1959, the less than 2-ton, domestic GMC gasoline trucks were equipped with Pontiac, Buick, and Oldsmobile V8swhereas the Canadian models used Chevrolet engines.

Google GMC V12. One place said. 4.4 ft long and 1500 lbs. Darryl, drop one of these into that 63?

Also from Wiki.

V6 engines were produced in 305, 351, 401 and 478 cubic-inch (5.0, 5.8, 6.6, and 7.8 respectively liter) displacements, with considerable parts commonality. During the latter years of production, 379-and-432-cubic-inch (6.2 and 7.1 L) versions with enlarged crankshaft journals were manufactured as well.

GMC produced a 637-cubic-inch (10.4 L) 60° V8 with a single cam shaft using the same general layout (bore and stroke) as the 478 V6. The 637 V8 was the largest displacement production gasoline V8 ever made for highway trucks.

The largest engine derived from the series was a 702-cubic-inch (11.5 L) "Twin Six" V12, which had a unique block and crankshaft, but shared many exterior parts with the 351.

A friend of mine was a mechanic for Smith Transport in the 60s. When he started there they had quite a few gmc v12 trucks in the fleet. He said that they could be tricky to tune up but when done right they worked really well. The trucks that started to replace them were Fords with 534 gas v8s. I remember him telling me that they had a lot of trouble with piston pins in the Fords, and the drivers liked the v12 better as it was smoother running. He also said that the 534 engine was harder on gas than the v12 gmc.

We had a 1969ish GMC 9500 series short nose dump truck with the 637 V8 with 5&3 trans, ungodly amounts of torque, all fed through the biggest 2bbl carb I had ever seen. Redline was like 2800rpm.

Darryl, 1500 lbs is like about 3 of the 230-6s. Instant low rider, at least the front?

I like these stories coming out too. $2-3,000 gets that truck to pei.

The V6 was definitely designed as a truck engine... 280 lb. ft. of torque at 1600 rpm!

1963_GMC_Pickups-11.jpg

Also neat that it was a 60° V6, which would help to keep it narrower than the typical 90° configuration.

GM was certainly building some capable heavy commercial equipment back in those days. Beautiful power plants in both design and appearance.
