Last Impala rolls of the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly line

I'm really out of the loop. Is this the last Impala ever or just at this plant?

It is the end of the Impala. This was the last plant producing Impalas.

The name Impala is probably the longest running car name in the automotive industry, 1958-2020.  Whats next ?

Sure, it's a long standing name, but it had a gap.

The latest Imp might as well have been a dressed Malibu imop. They are hard to tell apart.

I'm waiting for the name to be used on the next SUV/Car crossover.

Sadly, I'm sure you are right. But to be honest I haven't liked the Impala/Caprice line since the end of the 80's. One thing is sure: among the domestic makes the sedan style of car is a quickly dying breed. All SUVs and trucks from now on it seems.

Not your imagination. When the rules kicked in on cars, cars as the way we knew were on their way out, and the full frame truck-based SUV was on it's way in. I wanted to buy a police Caprice back in '89 but wifey nixed it.

Rules interrupted the game, changing the game. The Japanese read the wind and offered the right stuff for buyers, and the magic formula that the Big Four relied on was broken. Now we have a generation that was born & raised on imports (what can I say, my 1st new car was a Toyota after GM refused to tweak an order on a Cavalier V6 wagon for me, and my insurance company didn't care if the Mustang I was looking at was only a 4-cylinder). I would have done well back in the era where one could special-order a car. Today my specs would be factory freaks.

They have to sell what sells, not what satisfies the odd freak.

Production has changed, and the days of the Impala are over. As an enthusiast I am aware of the production possibilities. As for somebody who worked there, they generally could have given a rat's Ass on what they were building. Karma's a bitch, except the people it affects are a generation or 2 removed from the instigators that had their way paid despite the animosity.

The Impala and Cadillac XTS were the same car and were once built in Oshawa then moved to US.

To answer George, No body is  going to miss it except maybe the 38,576 buyers who got a 2019 version, even less for XTS 10,956 buyers.

Personally I'm still a big sedan buyer but this market is all but dead as crossovers and SUV's now dominate.

What this means is that there are excellent buys on Impalas out there. The top model was available with a 304 HP engine so they do offer decent performance and value when compared to the sister Cadillac XTS.

Current trend is towards trucks, SUVs, and 'crossovers' (basically tall station wagons but since nobody calls them station wagons anymore they are alright).  I've always been a "car" guy, never owned an SUV, truck, van, or anything else in my life (lost count, have had over 30 cars).  So now my choices are limited if I want to buy a new car.  Japanese, Korean, European, and Chrysler 300/Charger.  Oh well, the only thing constant is change...

I do find it a little weird, though, with all the outcry about climate change, the companies are dropping their most efficient platforms...

I think when it comes to climate change, a lot of folks say they want change for the better. What they really mean is that, as long as it does not effect them and some one else does what it takes to effect climate change. I have lost track of all the hypocrites i have met in my life in this regard. I suppose it is just human nature to a large extent. Cheers.

While I love sedans, I can 100% understand the SUV thing.

When you get older you appreciate how easy it is to get in and out of them, not to mention the improved line-of-sight and overall better utility. The better ones are also much more efficient than before.

No solid reason anymore to think they are all bad for the planet.

People simply buy what they like, and what feels like the best for their needs. So no surprise the big sedans are dying.

Obviously got that front fender from a Biscayne or Belair '6' cylinder.

It all comes down to your needs and preferences, when spending your money on a vehicle.  I have opportunities to drive many types of vehicles and spend a lot of seat time in both SUVs and cars.  100% prefer cars for driving enjoyment, though admittedly SUVs come in handy when we get some of our larger snowstorms for their greater ground clearance and AWD, and are generally good if you have lots of stuff to haul around (which is infrequent for me).  When the roads are dry, however, the lower center of gravity and typically lighter weight of cars make them so much better to drive, more nimble and tossable, less wallowy.

The market will bear whatever people are willing to spend money on, pure and simple.  The governments stepped in to the point of forcing the manufacturers to increase fuel economy and lower emissions, but the choice is still up to the customer to buy what they want/need... as it should be.

If you want to look at it from the point of view of the environment, though, all vehicles are bad for the environment.  However, from a comparison point of view, an sedan will always be 'better' for the environment than an SUV in the same segment (i.e. with similar length and width... or platform).  The vehicle genre in itself dictates that an SUV with the same 'footprint' as a sedan will have to be taller (less aerodynamic), heavier (due to its greater height and typically, equipment), and SUVs typically have AWD (though there is some grey area there as there are 2WD SUVS and AWD sedans) which results in a decrease of fuel economy.
