That would have been a great job, though I suspect there would have been some drawbacks and risk involved.

I've never had a Corvair, but I get the impression that they were quite capable cars.  Here's a vid of more offroad type driving...

I wonder how REAL most of this was. There might have been a lot of staging here, who knows. Not that i have anything against Vairs, i actually love them.  I would love a 1965-1969 Corsa in my garage, especially with a factory turbo and four speed on the floor.

I suspect everything you see on the film is real, but you probably don't see the many struggles or failures that they would have had - they likely would have ended up on the cutting room floor.

If you look at the footage, they had a pretty heavy-duty support vehicle with them that would have been useful to tow the vairs out of mudholes, and probably carry a decent assortments of parts and tools as well.  Not to mention, this is General Motors in its heyday, the budget for support would have been virtually unlimited.

Here is my favorite Corvair body style for sale in Ontario. This one is a 63. A Spyder with a 4 speed and a turbo.  36500 miles.

If the body is solid, that sounds like a super good deal. With that turbo and four on the floor........... WOW.

Interesting colour combo on the Corvair (gorgeous specimen). Different but I have seen before. Todd, wasn't your Firebird Esprit that pairing, silver with blue?

As for the support trucks, bring plenty of fan belts!

GM had to make the trek, Ford was making anti-Corvair propaganda on a circular track putting one against a Falcon. It was funny, the Falcon was smooth on the circle (driver relax.gif  ) while the Corvair was agitated and seemingly searching to break loose, like a hot-head was behind the wheel. frustrated.gif

Yes, my Esprit was the same colour combo. I wonder if it was sold in Canada? It'd be neat to see GM Docs on it if so.

This 1963 Chevrolet Corvair Monza Spyder was acquired by the seller two years ago and used as a rental car in California. The car is finished in blue over a black vinyl interior, and power comes from a turbocharged 145ci flat-six paired with a four-speed manual transaxle.

RE: Corvair

That's a nice one (and the price is good) but believe it or not I prefer the "club coupe" styling.

Not completely on topic, but I did find this Corvair on the Hemmings site from a few years ago.  Significant because it appears to be a nice survivor example and it has the backup light covers that I don't recall ever seeing before:
