Station Wagon Lovers

Spotted this on way to work this morning in MAPLE RIDGE  BC.

Absolutely gorgeous work in the restoration.

Just enjoy and know that cruising season is just around the corner out here. 20200310_093055.jpg20200310_093111.jpg20200310_093120.jpg

You guys are killing me. You do know I'm a closet finned Mopar fanatic, right?

To me the ultimate finned wagon is the 60-61 Chrysler New Yorker Wagon.

Dad's first car after WWII was a used $50 Model A. His next car was a new '57 Plymouth Savoy 2-door post, salmon pink with white 2-tone, flathead 230 six 3-speed. I came home from the hospital in a '61 Biscayne 4-door, shown below pulled off road.

Dad said of wagons, "they're too drafty & the heater isn't effective." Maybe dad never heard of the Canadian RPO C47, the rear seat heater. As long as it was a bench with a column shift, didn't have a power seat (fat chance!) it could have a separate heater core under the front seat with an surrounding blower towards the 2nd seat footwell. A nice big V8 would put out some fine heat in the winter.

The unit shown above was in a '57 Pontiac wagon!

The '71 Chrysler New Yorker 4-door hardtop, that I used to have, had a separate heater core in the trunk for the back seat passengers.  There was a valve in the engine compartment to direct coolant through pipes that went under the floor to the rear heater core.  I believe it was optional equipment as well.  I never really enjoyed any benefit from it though, as I only used it as a summer car...

I've got a brand new heater available, not sure when it was sold. It burns gasoline, its plumbed into the gas tank for fuel and the exhaust system for exhaust, and is plumbed into the block to work as a block heater, and has an in car heater unit as well. Explain that one to the insurance industry? Great if you live in a Northern climate.

Imagine what it would cost today to build a dash like that one above in the New Yorker.

I was speaking to an associate from Russia a few years ago, and apparently devices like that are common there.

The '64 RHD Convertibles like mine were made and shipped without heaters. (Only 54 were sent) The dealer (I beleive there was only one) then retro-fitted a Lucas unit. It's so small it doesn't even take the edge off!

Sounds like the old VW Bug heaters.
