4 speed conversion in a 66 impala, 327 powerglide, console. With a 348.

What do you need to convert the pg to a real car with 3 pedals? Carl? The 348 will likely mean headers as stock manifolds are center dump but Im most interested in pedals and zbar and bracket and the linkage for the pedals.
what years fit for pedals and linkage etc?

Trying to talk a friend into 3 pedals.

Don

Don, If your friend can't find used. To start the real car project,

Hubbard's Impala has a repop 65-66 pedal and z bar kit. Will fit the 65-66 brake pedal brace no issue.

Can't say how things would line up with a 348 though. Is the bellhousing to fit is different than BB/SB Chev? So the z bar stud location is anyone's guess.

A couple of minutes spare time while my wife is in the fitting room! Two most important things I learned about this conversion. One, make sure you have the right clutch fork ball stud in the bellhousing. It has to be for a B body. I think it's still available new from GM. Two, you must have the correct clutch fork. It only fits 65 to 70 B body Chevy and Canadian Pontiac. The correct fork is not reproduced regardless of what websites show. Without those two things being correct the geometry is all wrong.

I don't know my 348 stuff and Mark mentioned about the bellhousing. If it bolts up from a small block or big block then you're set. If the bellhousing fits from other engines then they will have the correct threaded boss for the z-bar pivot ball to thread into. You may already know all this stuff but wanted to mention it just in case!

If your friend is not in a hurry, my favourite wrecking yard (about 200 miles from my home) has a few sets of 65-66 pedals. I could likely get a set for you this summer but not much before that. The yard is totally snowed under right now I hear.

Thanks for all the replies, my buddy may take you up on your offer Carl.

348-409 have the same geometry as the bb-sb for zbar and bellhousing. I had my 409 in my 59 for a while, motor mounts, 4 speed Saginaw, clutch linkage, everything was a direct swap from the 283.

What about a 4 speed shifter with the console?

Don

The 66 Chev 4 speed consoles are a tough find and $$$

I have a pretty nice original shifter body that I have taken apart, cleaned, replaced the parts that wear on them and shimmed it up so it's close to new condition. I don't have the correct rods for B body though, they are unique. Also, he needs a special spacer plate/adapter that goes between the shifter body and the tailhousing but that part is reproduced and I think it's only about $50-$60 US for that.

Can you use a Hurst shifter and handle in the 4 speed console Carl?

My friend Tim will likely be joining here.

The only other difference in the 348-409 with a SB or BB, you have to use a 168 tooth flywheel to get the starter to line up.

The zbar block mount location is the same for all these V8's. For the 235 sixes at least, they used the same zbar and linkage as the V8's, there was a bracket between the block and the zbar stud.

Finally made it here! All this is good info. Don is beating over the head with a bat! This car is a work in progress I drive it now but no fun with a PG and a 3.08. Im thinking Carls idea to go pick apart a donor car is a good one. What ever is left over thats not there look online. Ill keep my eye open for a manual console. I have 2 autos now one with the factory gauges. Thats a bolt on piece on the front so it interchanges. Im taking notes Don!!

Yes, there is a Competition Plus to fit the stock 4 speed console but it's been long discontinued. They are harder to find than a stock shifter and most of the ones I've seen for sale have been more expensive than buying an original shifter too.

Ok, the big flywheel is no issue though, as long as you have the correct cast iron nose starter with the correct bolts for it. That bellhousing is a bit expensive to buy unless you manage to snag a bargain off Kijiji or at a swap meet maybe. The flywheels aren't hard to find and even new they aren't outrageously priced.
