International Underdog: Pontiac Parisienne

International Underdogs. A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO, I talked about desirable rear-wheel-drive 1980s cars. A friend remarked that I did not mention this months International Underdog, although I did mention the Pontiac Catalina.

One of the best GM models ever were those down sized B bodies. Reliable, durable, easy to fix, comfortable, affordable, just a great purchase!

I remember these all over the roads everywhere because they were such a great value and for the times, a great looking car. They seemed to have more class than the Chevy version, especially with the fender skirts. It is nice to see that they are appreciated today.

Slowest small block ever made but sure good on gas! And they did need a new cam from time to time.....

I like this era of Pontiac Parisiennes. Good looking and boy were they quiet and smooth on the highway.

However my most vivid memory of a Pontiac Parisienne was a ride I had in a '67 Parisienne in my hometown in Canada,

back around 1970. I was hitchhiking to university from home and I caught a ride from a guy in his 2 door HT Parisienne.

Beautiful car and as many know Canadian Pontiacs back then were Pontiac bodies on Chevy frames with Chevy engines.

No wide track, unfortunately, but other than that , very nice cars.

Anyways this car had a three on the tree manual transmission and moved out effortlessly and quickly.

After about 5 minutes I asked the guy what engine did he have...a 396 ...or a 327,

as it certainly wasn't a 307 cube V8...or whatever was standard back then.

He said no...he had a 427. A 427 with a 3 on the tree.

Imagine that. Must of been one of...I don't know...but very rare.

I do know that GM offered a HD 3 on the tree for it's big inch engines, but that combo was seldom taken.

He wasn't banging shifts...just driving it 'normally'...but you could feel the effortless pickup with that big rat motor.

Now here's a car I wouldn't mind having...with it's unusual option package.

One more thing, as aside as it were.

My understanding is that while Chevy 409's in the USA had valve covers featuring the Chevy bowtie ..

it was not the case with Canadian market Chevies or Pontiacs.

They were bowtie less on the valve covers. The bowtie was stamped in the metal valve cover for the American market.

Reason why...because the Canadian market Pontiacs also had the 409 Chevy V8 as an option from around 1961 to '65

and GM I suppose felt that a Pontiac owner would not want a bowtie emblem anywhere on his Canuck Poncho.
