American Grafitti

This isolation is going to drive me crazy!

We turned off our dish for March because we planned to be gone the whole month. Thankfully, I PVR'd American Graffiti a while back, so I just started watching it. Still my favourite car show ever----I'd forgotten how much fun all the cars and the music are!

Hey Carl, you're right on that for sure but the film More American Graffiti is also a very worthy and underrated film.

I hope you can watch it sometime. If you cant access it I could mail you my copy. (Bit of a hoarder, ya know.)

I wish they'd make one more sequel based on the characters these days. Many of the actors are still around and it would be fascinating to see how they would have matured and dealt with age, as we have had to deal with it.  Of course the John character wouldn't be able to be in it.

I was very unhappy with the sequel. Quite honestly I was mad at them for making a sequel that in my mind was so far from the original. I realize what they were trying to do but I just wanted more good old 60's small town car fun...

I still have Netflix, Prime and Crave. So far we have watched the entire Battlestar Galactica. Now I am searching for the original with Lorne Green.

I agree that it was a great movie, one of the best on the subject and the time.  Of course it was super nostalgic and a little surreal, but a real feel good movie with lots of nice cars to drool over and an interesting story with characters you could relate to as well.  I liked the sequel as it filled in the blanks from the narrative given at the end of the movie.  I would like to see a follow up as well, maybe set in the 1980s when they were experiencing adult life and looking back to those innocent teenage years as us older guys often do.

Regardless, the original was one if the best car movies ever made, IMHO.

For sheer action and cool car sounds, Vanishing Point is one of my favourites as well,  Though it may not appeal to board members here because the only prominent GM product in it is as a stunt double in the final scene...

And not even a very good visual double at that!

I saw American Grafitti (1973) and More American Grafitti (1979) when they both came out new in the theater. Loved them both then and still love them both now. Got the first film on Beta tape then VHS tape then DVD when it was released and got the second film on DVD when it was released. I can honestly say that the first film has been my most watched film of any film ever, period. I never get tired of watching the first original film. I enjoy the second one but it pales compared to the first. I enjoy catching mistakes in "period" films and the only mistake i caught on American Grafitti, was seeing a 1967 Chevrolet Impala parked in one scene. Keep in mind the film is set in 1962. I remember buying my very first video machine (Beta) in 1983 and even before i bought blanks for taping, i bought a Beta copy of American Grafitti. I remember paying a ridiculous amount of money to order a copy of that film but i had to have it. Carl, thanks for bringing back wonderful memories of a wonderful film. smile

And then of course there is that Canadian car classic (Its not a long list), Fast Company, shot at Speedway Park in Edmonton in the late 1970's.  Pretty silly stuff but neat visuals. We watched it at one of our Edmonton coffee meetings a few years ago. Probably won't find it on net flix though.

Ken, i remember that film as well. There is a scene where the main Character drives his fuel funny car on the street at traffic lights and there is another scene near the end where the same character in the same fuel funny car bumps a small plane as it is about to take off. The villain of the film was in the plane and dies in fiery crash. I watch that film just for the drag racing footage. smile

It's on Youtube but it's only 1:13:00 long and Wiki says the movie is an hour and a half. I haven't watched the Youtube yet to see what's missing.

Looks like its been mirror imaged to avoid the copyright stuff as well.  That would be way too annoying to watch all the way through.

Some groovy canuck actors though with Nicholas Campbell and Don Francks.

I proudly have both those "Car films" in my video collection. Saw both of them when they came out on television, as a wee lad. Both these films are available on DVD. California Kid (1974) with Martin Sheen has many mistakes in it, keep in mind that the movie is suppose to be set in 1958. That is ok because the movie is great to watch and Martin Sheen is very good in it. DUEL (1971) is of course a classic and a must have in your "Car movie" collection. If you order the DVD of DUEL, make sure you get the Anniversary edition because of all the endless special features in it with Mr. Steven Spielberg taking us through the making of the film. smile

Don Francks, the Canadian actor. What an amazing person he was and a major car guy. I met him twice at two different car shows in southern Ontario. Both times he took the time to speak to me like he was an actual friend. He left a lasting impression on me because of his decency, humor and wise demeanor. Sadly he died in 2016 at the age of 84. He drove his early model T race car to many car shows. smile

I didn't know he was a car guy. I knew he was an amazingly versatile performer going from singing jazz in his early days to playing all kinds of roles over the years.  But I guess if you want to be a Canadian actor and not starve to death you'd better able to do anything.

Heres a bit of American Graffiti nostalgia. Apparently it sold privately and never went to auction.

That 58, or the chopped Phay-roes Merc are my two favourites from that show. If I had to pick it would be the 58 I think.

I guess Terry lied, didn't he say it had 6 Strombergs?
