Something we never thought about.

I have a delayed shipment of car parts coming.

Currently, it now is in "Far Rockaway NY 11619"

Long Island New York !

That area is the largest growing area of COVID19 in the US.

The part, when it gets here, will be not handled by me.

I'll put it away for a while.

I've been wondering about that. I was thinking of ordering from Rock Auto. I think it may wait. I may not order stuff from anywhere.

I thought New York was in lock-down - all non-essential businesses were supposed to stop work. Unless your part is for an ambulance, I'd be surprised if it gets to you any time soon anyway. ?

I received a parcel from the UK last Friday. I left it outside in the minus temps for (3) days. I received a letter from Australia today, it will be outside for (3) days (as well as the rest of the mail).

I've been told that even a cold winter in Manitoba isn't enough to stymie the virus.

Darryl, what understand is that heat effects it and not cold. Am i off the mark here, i thought i heard this somewhere.

Ive heard it survives for about 24 hours on cardboard and up to 72 hours on hard smooth surfaces like steel or plastic. Keeping in mind that it could have been packed by someone with the virus, Id just stick it on a shelf somewhere out of the way for a week or so to be safe. Regarding cold, Ive read conflicting information, but its possible the cold could help preserve it. Either way, just be careful and dont take chances unless its critical that you do. Just my 2 cents.

I have a small item coming from China. I don't think I need to be too concerned.
That said, with all the hype going on, one of the girls at work last week said that we shouldn't pop the bubble wrap that we get parts in......Chinese air in them

I think some warehouses can remain open but no showrooms? I think?

But what I am concerned about is, not even the shipments but; lets say the essentials are opened. For example grocery store.

1) How do we know who shops there and if they have it or not?

2) if someone that did have it went there to buy something, that means they could potentially or would get someone else there sick? So if they got an associate that works there sick and that associate goes home to there partner/family, whatever...  lets say that family member thats at home works for non essential business. Is that not just going to be a cycle carried over and over again when work resumes? Am I right or am I confused? for the thing to work, hopefully yes, those with the virus dont go out, otherwise wont it just repeat??

You are right on.

And that's the point, people may be carrying it and not even know it, go to the store and spread it.

That's why the isolation is so important. I really don't even want to go anywhere (and I can't anyway!)

I ordered a complete interior for one of the cars from Legendary at the first of the year. I should call tomorrow to find out where it stands

I would be more concerned about who delivers the item to your mailbox or door.

One cough or sneeze would probably last far longer for the virus to attach itself than

coming from far away.

Thankfully my parcels that are sitting at the border will be there for likely a month or more......lots of time for that virus to die.

I think the point is that when you imagine all the different ways that the virus can be spread it boggles the mind.  No wonder it is spreading like wildfire all around the world.

I hardly consider myself an expert, but the way I see it, try to lessen your exposures by listening to what the actual experts in the science and medical fields are saying.  And they are making recommendations to the Federal, Provincial, and Municipal governments, who are setting the rules to follow.  Keep up on what they are saying and listen to them.  And use your head.

Keep distance, keep hands clean, don't touch your face until your hands are cleaned and sanitized.  Stay inside in the safety of your home or yard unless completely necessary to go out.  Anything you bring into your home treat it like it's infected.  Sanitize it if possible, or leave it somewhere that it won't be touched long enough for the virus to die off.

Even with all that, there are no 100% guarantees.  We all need a little bit of luck to go along with our precautions, but the more people are considerate and heed the warnings, the better off we will be.  I'll have a hard time conjuring up any sympathy for those who disregard the warnings and become infected, but unfortunately they will cause others to suffer... or die.   Yeesh, I'm sounding awfully preachy these days...

Best of luck to all... stay healthy!

Very well stated with a great dose of common sense. I'm gonna go stir crazy being locked up here another 10 days but I've told my wife many times I couldn't live with myself if I happened to spread it because of foolishness. When we came through the airport Customs on Thursday and they asked us to do 14 day isolation we responded "absolutely".

I'd be OK with receiving a parcel as a drop at the door or in the mailbox. I'd sanitize it before handling it.

I might have to do that if I need anything in the next few weeks as all non-essential businesses were shut down by government order today.

This is because our case count went up by 15 today from 9 to 24. Most of the growth seems to be associated with travel outside the province or country, and it has been reported that people arriving at the airport a couple of nights ago who were  advised by public health to go home and self isolate, apparently had to make a trip to the Tim Horton's counter at the airport before heading home. This and other examples of parties at homes on the weekend prompted a crackdown.

parcels coming to your door are not having any virus alive on them unless the driver put them there( which is possible but all the drivers I have seen are wearing rubber gloves)-but to be safe everyone-I would just spray it off with sanitizer to be safe as possible. Wash your hands -often. Guess what I am saying is there is no way a virus is going to live on a box that went through a shipping regime. My daughter works with viruses-yes scary ones-and she says they have a very hard time keeping them alive in the labs even under perfect conditions. Bottom line is what everyone else has stated-be safe-keep your distance if you have to go out anywhere. Lots of hand washing with soap and water.

We have closed our businesses retail store as of last Friday because we would have no control who comes and goes. Crappy but it is what it is. I don't want my employees to get it.

I think we still have a lot to learn about this virus...

https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.cnbc.com/amp/2020/03/23/cdc-coronavirus-survived-in-princess-cruise-cabins-up-to-17-days-after-passengers-left.html

Coronavirus RNA survived for up to 17 days aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, lasting far longer on surfaces than previous research has shown, according to new data published Monday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The gloves only protect the driver from what may be on the box, they do not protect you from what may be on the box. Who knows who has handled it/coughed on it etc. This is why washing your hands is soooooo important. If he touches 50 parcels with the same pair of gloves he is still safe but may have transferred contamination to your parcel.
