RE: My next ground up restoration

Back from the sandlbasting shop (my driveway...) Now to get some sandpaper and do the finishing touches on stripping it. I think I'm just going to blast the outside. I'll scuff the inside and spray it too but I don't see the point in stripping it bare.

No i did some amateur auto body and then painted it black, then drove it everywhere. In 1996 I pulled it apart and promised myself that I would do a proper restoration as time and money would allow. Just a little tease as i prepare my story for June!

Hey, I'm allowed. I've owned my tanker for about 47 years!

How much metal flake are you using? (7) coats of clear?wink I'd like to do toy vehicle that big. You've got me thinking.

I love restoring stuff. I just finished restoring a 1940's Canadian-made Beaver jointer and a German late 1800's ship's whale oil lamp.

Round one of bondo and primer done on the tanker. Thankfully the tractor really doesn't need much body work, if any. I may just blast it, prime it, paint it.

Wow I hate body work/sanding....

where the trim black splatter for the guide coat? You'll never get the thing straight if you don't have a guide coat-come on man! If you are going to restore -over-restore!

LOL, these things were a bit rough when they came off the line, believe me. If you look careful you can see some of the spot welds in the picture of it in primer. When I painted it in my youth I filled those even though they were just painted over when it was new. NOW it's going to be just like when it was built! So I guess yes, I am over restoring it!

I can't find stock hubcaps, that's going to be my one headache. Not sure what I will do yet for those.

Irving is an eastern oil company. Wonder how many of those oil tankers are kicking around ... I'll have to research.

I also hate bodywork. I don't have the patience for it. That's why I'm only doing the small parts and leaving the finishing and painting of my 68 Impala to a guy who is not only  extremely skilled but also has the drive to do what is necessary for a top grade result. Not sure he can get any supplies right now however, as the Covid-19 epidemic has all non-essential businesses shut down.

By the way, whether or not it's your favorite pastime, you are doing a nice job with the refinishing of the tanker.

Thanks John, the good part is, it doesn't have to be perfect, and I don't want it perfect. Truth is, these toys did not have perfect lines when they were built. I've looked at some pictures online and there's some less than perfect fit and finish from the factory!

Late last night I was searching online for the elusive hubcaps I need to replace some of mine that are dented quite bad. Lo and behold I managed to find a collector in Alberta who has many of these trucks and he thinks he knows a guy in Ontario who has some for sale. We messaged on Facebook for likely close to an hour and I found out he's also and old car guy (F**d) too! He said he just sold a 61 and 63 Parisienne for his uncle...

He thought it was pretty cool to know an original owner of a Minnitoy tanker truck!

The tank is almost ready for paint. I little bit more high build primer for a couple of little flaws, Scotchbrite the undercarriage and then it's ready to hit the paint booth.

I'm starting on the cab today. Again, no surprises, rust free and no previous accidents! Clear title though, not a salvage title so it's what I expected biggrin

Nothing fancy, single stage just like when it was new in 62!

I was debating wetsanding, I'll see how it turns out. I'll likely just wait for a nice day and do it out on the driveway.

Yes, those caps have those one way clips on the back so that was tough. I really need to find someone who has some caps or figure out a way to make something. Some of my caps are in rough shape.
