Hidden gas cap

Another thread got me thinking about this. Hemmings did a nice article on it.

Some in that article I never knew about.

While we don't think of 70's cars in this way, my '73 LeMans has stumped a number of full service attendants...its behind the license plate which I think is pretty common but if you are a teen or 20 something pumping gas you'd have no idea.

Though I rarely let anyone fill my tank, my '76 Mercury Cougar XR7 still stumps most people as the fill is also hidden behind the rear license plate.

The centre location is very helpful at a busy gas station.

Any pump will due !

You are correct, Randy. My Fleetwood Bounder Class A Ford V10 has the fill at the rear behind the license plate. This location is very handy especially when I am also pulling a car and cannot back up.

Couldn't get a full time job in the late 60's,so I ended up working 4 part-time jobs.

Remember them all...Miracle Mart (remember that store?) Windsor Star night copy boy,Wahl Clipper machine shop,

and pumping Shell gas for a couple of years, during the summer and while going to college.

You learn very quickly where the gas cap is.

I still remember (it was not a gas cap) but a customer asking me to check either the oil or tranny fluid (Studebaker I think ?)

and I couldn't find it and finally had to ask where it was....

turned out to be  on the hump inside the car......anybody remember fluid checks inside of a car?

I was driving a 10 passenger Ford van earlier this month at Indian Wells and had to fuel it up. I looked at the fuel gauge and it showed for the driver's side. Pulled in but couldn't find anything. There was a side back up sensor that almost looked like a cap but still nothing. Got a little smarter and opened the door and it was there at the rear of the door jamb.

For me the ultimate hidden gas cap will forever be the 1956 Chevrolet car. The drivers side tail light completely swings down to expose the cap. There are some other notable examples but the 56 Chev is at the top of the heap.

The top of my list for the "ultimate hidden gas cap" is the 1956 and 1957 Lincoln Mark II models which had the filler located on the driver's taillight.  It simply opened to the right for easy access.

The only problem with rear fill gas tanks is what happened if you get "tapped" in a rear-ender.

A friend of mine had this happen, and afterwards when he filled up his car, he had to do it very slowly, or the gas would "burp up" all over the place.

I remember a Humber ( an English Car ) that had a reflector on the rear fin that was actually the gas cap.
