People can be difficult

I replied to a Craiglist ad for a couple of old shifters for sale in Phoenix.

Me: Would you be able to tell me the lengths of the 3 shift rods on that one shifter? Or would you prefer I call you?

Him: Longest is 16 3)4"  next 12" reverse 7"

Me: I think those will work for me, that looks pretty close to what I need.

The shifter bodies look pretty rusty. Do the arms move, or are they seized?

Are you willing to ship, either UPS or USPS? Do you do Paypal?

I know, lots of questions! I would call you if you like.

Him: Call or text 928-555-5555  (I altered the number when I posted this)

Me: I'll try calling you shortly.

(After leaving him a voice mail, I wait. And wait. And wait. I think I called again the next day, second or third try managed to reach him. He has no way to accept payment other than someone standing there giving him cash. I tell him I'll work on finding someone and got back to him the next day. Found a guy to do it for me, seller agreed that 8 AM next day would be great. Next day, Thursday at 8:00AM my guy went went there and paid as promised. Don't hear a thing from seller that entire day, next day Friday at 1:38 PM I send an email.)

Me: Hi J********** I'm just checking in with you about the shifters.  I understand my guy paid you yesterday?

(Wait 1/2 hour, no reply, decide to call. First try, "Your call did not go through as dialed." Second try, rapid busy signal like it does when all circuits are busy. Third try, "Your call did not go through as dialed." I'm starting to think I got scammed now..... Fourth try he picks up the phone)

Him: (yelling) "I TOLD YOU NOT TO CALL MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE"  and he hangs up.

Me: confuseconfuseconfuse By now I'm thinking he's taken my money and we're done, scammer...

(About 2 minutes later I get an email)

Him: I am at work ,do not need call after call¡;!!!!!

Me: I apologize J********, I didn't realize that.

Me: confuseconfuseconfuse  "Thinking".........Let's see, you said you prefer calls, this would be the second time I've called. confuseconfuseconfuse

(About 2 minutes later, one more email)

Him: Shifters in box, will take to post office Monday and stand in line to send. (Am I supposed to feel guilty or something???) Will send tracking number Monday when I get number from post office.

(Yes, Monday came and went, no contact. Tuesday 11:45 I get an email.  I had paid him $20 as requested for shipping cost)

Him: Shifters nailed, last time I used a flat rate box cost was $20,now it's $39.50 this why I do not ship, lose money

(Notice, still no tracking number but he says he "nailed" the shifters.....)

Me: If you want to give me your mailing address I will send you another $20. I'm not the kind of guy to leave you hanging.

Do you have the tracking number for me so I can see when the box gets to the border?

Thanks, Carl

(Never heard a thing from him again. Yesterday I get a notice from my parcel place in North Dakota that a package arrived. I track it and it was shipped from Phoenix on Tuesday. Will it be shifters? Will it be a bomb? Will it be a pile of human crap? Who knows, I guess eventually I'll be able to get the package and see.  Never gave me a tracking number, never replied to my offer to pay the extra shipping.)

Why do guys advertise stuff if this is how they are going to be? I was never rude to him in the least, never bugged him (other than phoning him, which is what he said to do), never scammed him, got him cash and never even negotiated on the price, we never even discussed the price, I just paid what he asked for including his requested shipping amount....

Well, at least you have something waiting for you in Pembina, what ever it might be.

I bet if he went to all that trouble to actually ship it, it has to be the real deal. Sometimes purchasing goodies is a real adventure, case in point, I recently got scammed for a couple hundred bucks. So, maybe in six months down the road when the border opens, you can go and pick it up?

Patience Mr. Stevenson with our fellow Canadians. There were a couple guys out west here who used to have quite a few shifters. Yeah youve picked a couple more difficult ones recently. I didnt see your wanted ad on here.

It's either that or I hire Runnin' Red courier to bring all my parcels for me. The issue isn't the courier cost for the transportation or the brokerage fees. The problem is then I pay duty/taxes on all of the stuff. I have about $400 worth of stuff there and if I go with my wife they will usually wave us through with our packages. I'm torn what to do...

It could be a while before you can cross the border.

I was thinking about Runnin Red as well, but like you say, the service isn't free.  But, you have had a good run on being waved through duty free on your good name many times,.....you can just average the cost over many transactions......biggrin  Still cheap and you get it all sooner rather than later!

These are originals, 64-67 with the reverse lockout. One of them has the linkage for a 65-67 B body from what I can tell. I have not had a lot of luck finding that particular setup.

You missed my wanted ad here? That could be because I never thought to run a wanted ad biggrin

I'm surprised you are able to do any of this with coronavirus going on.  Things are not normal in the world - the US just topped 20,000 deaths from covid-19 yesterday.

Not defending the guy, but I know I sure as heck wouldn't be all too anxious to be running out to a post office to mail a box in these conditions... but then again I wouldn't even be posting an ad on craigslist or whatever, so sounds like the guy must not be all that concerned about getting the virus.

I can't see things going back to normal for a long time yet, so the border will probably be closed to non-essential travel for quite some time.  Be patient, a car part is not worth dying over.

They are a local courier company based out of Emerson. I know nothing about them other than I've seen the truck running on Hwy 75 and it's got a whole pile of info plastered on the side of it regarding their business of bringing parcels across for customers.

I agree with you on the part about selling these days. It was clear though that this had nothing to do with a virus but everything to do with me making his life miserable by responding to his ad. I was a jerk for trying to make the transaction as flawless as possible!

I did some internet sleuthing and found out he has a restoration shop. If and when I ever get back to Arizona I fully intend to track him down, hand him $20 and tell him why. (if it's actually true that shipping was $40, not $20. The USPS site says the box he put them in should have cost $21.10 to ship!)

How can a guy be in business and operate with an attitude like that?

I agree with you regarding his poor attitude - but just trying to understand the situation in today's context.

I'm wondering if he is having some cognitive issues.  It's odd that he would tell you to phone, then tell you not to phone.  That's just not normal, even with somebody who is trying to be a jerk.

I hate bad attitude, and I hate paying duty on stuff bought in the US but imported there from China, and high brokerage fees by some shippers. Often we have no choice because what we need is in the US.

Most guys are good, only a few are not. But here's a good story: when I bought my 69 Kingswood in Florida in 2012, it was a California car with AC but no tinted glass, not even the windshield. I wanted tinted glass and was lucky enough to find a guy in central Florida who was parting a 70 Kingswood Estate. Meanwhile my 69 was being picked up in Ocala in northwest Florida and I wanted to get the glass placed in it before pickup. I had no way to do that, but after a little communication the 70 parts seller agreed to carry the parts to my car seller in Ocala, who then placed them in the car. The seller of the glass wrapped it well for that kind of shipping and charged a very reasonable fee to move it for me.

In my experience that's how most people in this hobby are. In fact I've only ever been misled once, which unfortunately was on the purchase, sight unseen, of a car in Florida that turned out to be quite rusty and which I re-sold for half of what I had into it. My mistake, you live and learn, but I always assume people are honest unless they give me a reason to think otherwise.

Everyone I've dealt with on this board - without exception - has been honest, co-operative and helpful. I'm not surprised by that  .... and I do very much appreciate it.

Lots of A-holes own a business. Some go into law enforcement. Others go into customer support. Ebay, Kijiji and Craigslist seem to attract all these persons!

Not to lighten the situation, but you can find some good deals out there right now because of this reason along with the current U.S. unemployment percentage. If sellers are willing to sell a certain item that I want cheaper, I'm willing to buy.

Good point, Darryl.  We all have to find our own way through this thing.
