Wooden Machinist Chest and Mystery Tools

I just brought home a new-to-me, very old machinists tool chest.  It is not one of the solid oak ones and I suspect it has little collector value, but it is special to me.  It is made largely of plywood, but it seems to be quite well made with dovetail joints etc.  No green felt, but I am considering adding that.

Too bad that the stickers on the inside of the lid are damaged. One boasts of Johnny Parsons, 1950 Indianapolis Winner and "Friction Proofing Oil".  Another commemorates the 195? National Air Race Winner.  The Imperial Tobacco Fire safety sticker is in pretty good shape, as is the Centenary Sticker for BC joining the Union of the Colonies in 1966.

Inside are a bunch of tools (taps (including some NPT, and even some Left Hand ones!) and dies, hook wrenches, chisels etc.).  There are also a couple tools that I am not sure of.  They look kind of familiar, but I can't quite place them...

First up (I'll call it Number One) is what I suspect is a chain breaker.  A King Dick chain breaker.

Number Two is some kind of spring clip remover?  Pretty simple, but they're stainless steel and hinge is tight.  Any ideas?

Number Three:  The steel wire/clip slides in and out and I think it is intended to attach to something so you can apply leverage or brace it?  Could it be used in the sharpening of saws? I Googled the Simonds name and found a website that offered saw blade sharpening tools...

Number 4 is stamped Sunnen, Made in St Louis, but no numbers or description.  The round end (right & bottom) has a threaded hole.  I have no idea....

Last (Number 5), is this some kind of cutting bit, or dog for forcing a door closed or ???.  Looks familiar. I know I've seen one of these before but my mind isn't making a connection...

I google "King Dick"

To my surprise, no porno biggrin

A old British bicycle company.

My guess is that all the tools were for fixing bicycles.

America Pickers are classic bicycle nuts and you can contact them through their website.

They actually responded to me last year when a rare bike came up for dale in Hamilton.

Number 4 is part of a cylinder Honing set-up  Sunnen is a honing tool company.

Here's a modern version of number 4

#1 I think you're right about this one.

#2 looks like a disconnect tool for fuel line or brake line.

#3  shaped a lot like a old style tool bit holder for a lathe,

or a holder for a  file  for sharpening saws.

#5 a cutting bit tool for a lathe.

I found the toolbox through an ad on Kijiji. Made my month! I got it as a compliment to my little model/thread cutting lathe:

IMG_7392 (640x480).jpg

I got the lathe as part of my "learn to machine" effort.  I was signed up for an Introductory Metal Lathe course at the local Maker Space, but Covid nixed that so I've been reading and playing.

The King Dick brand is new to me. I'd never heard of them before. Seems like a quality product though. Should come in handy. I have a cheap bicycle chain breaker that works but it's pretty delicate.

Thanks for the Sunnen info. I never thought of that. I spent a lot of hours on a Sunnen CK-10 many many moons ago so I should have made the connection. For some reason, my mind always associates Sunnen with Sun tools. There are a couple small cylinder hones in the box, likely brake cylinder hones. They're well-used and the stones are just about worn out, but there is also a brand new set of three stones in the box. I will check to see if Number 4 is related to either of the other honing tools.

Greaser:

I'm not sure if No. 5 is hard enough to be a cutting bit.  I can test it to see.

#2 - hmm.  Maybe for those wire spring hose clamps.  Good one!

There are a couple of other pieces I am not sure about. Photos to come...

It is a high speed bit goes in this type of holder.

Made for ease of only having to sharpen one surface for cutting.

PM me if you need any info about machining...I'll be more than happy to help if I can.
