Antique or Garbage hauler- Can't Decide

This is my latest acquisition that caused the latest inquisition by the wifey.

You know the one. "You're smiling. What have you done? Nothing. Oh really...." etc etc..

To be clear, this was a deal I made with a local farmer before the whole world shut down. I had already paid for it and was just waiting for spring.

I just picked it up yesterday. Drove to the guy's yard, had to mess with the timing, boosted it and held the driver's door closed the whole way home. (Sagging doors on these trucks really screw up the latches eventually.)

Its a 1990 Silverado Z71 4x4 350 auto with 152,000 on the clock.  It was bought by the guy's father and after he died it was used on the farm for about ten years. Been dinged up here and there and has a bit of rust on the box wheel arches and under the moldings but the cab is really solid, partly due to the stupid looking running boards.

I bought it because I figured I need a runaround garbage hauler and these are really great trucks that run usually at least 300,000 kms. Parts are really easy to come by as well. I also like the pre 91ones with the sort of space age dashes for some reason.

So the question is now that I have bought a 30 year old truck. Is it a garbage hauler or a treasured antique?

Extra points g iven to your opinion if you can identify the make and year of the  sheet metal in the box. (I'm already loading it up with stuff I don't need.)

It's a daily driver antique... so both!  I'm showing my age though because the first thing I thought was... "antique??  That's not an antique!"... uhhh... 30 years?  Has it been that long?!

In the bed... Willys parts?

Edit: you wanted year... 1939?

Edit again: errrr... 1938?

Wow that was a short contest!

Yeah to me a 1990 truck is pretty high tech but to most people it's prehistoric.

That is a pretty nice clean example of one of those trucks.  Nowadays those things are getting rare!  i have a 91 very similar all original,  not really my style but i inherited it

Ken, does it have the dreaded all white dial cluster, or does it have the white dials with the red tips so you can at least read the gauges!

It needs a good cleaning in and out to get the manure off it as well as fixing the saggy doors, a good tune up and a couple new tires.

The back bumper is rusted junk though.

However the cassette deck works great!

I think the 1990 had teh better cluster that carl shows.  1991 was the first year for the nice tach cluster with proper needles.

Yes, it seems to me that it was only 88-89 in white but had to ask!  We sure changed a lot of those on warranty when they came out with the upgrade.

You made me go out in the dark to take a look! Scary out there.

Its the dash with the red tips.

That would be only in 1990 then?

Put on a nice, homemade, square, step diamond plate bumper.

GM pickup bumpers never fair well, even ones 20 years newer than yours.

Wow, 976,000 km! My 1989 only had 634,000 when I had to scrap it due to frame rust.

I cheated a little as I have read all your postings about your Willys electric truck conversion... so at first it was a guess, then I confirmed the headlight pod shapes using the old brochure site that I use for reference all the time... wink

That's pretty good detective work! I had managed to find three sets of 38 Willys front sheet metal and have now got a fairly good set made out of the best parts of them. (I didn't do it myself. Hammer welding on thin, fatigued metal without warping the crap out of it is beyond my skills so I farmed it out.) If you want I'll post some pics of the good stuff. This box load is the stuff that is going back on the parts car.

For the other guys I agree that the long box regular cab is to me the real truck. It was actually difficult to find this type (you know, without the extended cab and pretty much original, if a bit tired) and I was hoping to get a manual tranny but in every other way this is pretty good. I had previously bought a quite pristine 1995 Chevy short box slabside 4x4 with a hard box cover and still have it, but it is just too small to haul anything much and it rides like a buckboard.

I'm trying to sell it actually and I have been getting offers but haven't made a deal yet. In fact this is  what saved me from some fairly harsh criticism from my old sweetyface.

Maybe today I'll post some picture of the bad side. I didn't want to show it yesterday but the rear wheel  arch on the pass side is pretty bad.Oh well, fixable.

Garbage hauler??    Give it a clean up as that is nice looking truck.

I had a 94 long box 4 x 4 regular cab, then we had children and we needed extra room so we had to sell it.  I donno but it looks a little too nice for a garbage hauler imop.

I don't mean to demean the truck but what I want in a truck is one that you wouldn't hesitate to use for any purpose like towing, moving dirt  even hauling garbage when you have to.  I don't intend to trash it but I don't intend to treat it like a show truck either

This one is basically pretty solid but has rust on the rear wheel arches and under some of the trim, quite a few dents and scratches, a very needy exhaust system, and an engine that has a miss right now.  It has a GM plastic box liner so the box is quite functional.

The 95 that I bought is just too pretty to use as a working truck but this one I figure I can grow old with as long as I do some work now and then on it.

I always loved these years of chevys.. dependable run forever, parts are cheap. I've had a couple of them. I say use it. drive it like you stole it!!!! Lol. My buddy had the short box step side a few years back. We had that ripping down the hyway buried the dial needle and it started to come back up on the other side of the cluster. Anyway nice truck.

That's what trucks are (were) for. Nowadays, they are mostly 80 thousand dollar grocery-getter/baby seat haulers that go to Walmart.no

My 2006 is a "stripper" 4x4 (hand crank windows, no AC, etc.). I did add a slider rear window (for air circulation), mudflaps, an aftermarket stereo/speakers ('cause I love my music), side window air deflectors (for air circulation), and for a bit of summer bling, chrome-alloy rims.

Most of my kms were put on by hauling stuff.

That is the real deal alright!  Good stuff!

Someone wanted to see the 1995 Chevy that I am trying to sell. Here are a few pics. I'm still working on a writeup and price.

Once I have that done I will post it on this forum if anyone is interested.

Some of the pics don't show up all that well as I was trying to photograph black on a sunny day. The paint and body is generally very good except  minor scratches and  a chip or two. They weren't on there when I bought it which is  why I really don't like to use this thing for hauling duties too much. The drivers front is showing rust on the wheel arch but I have a NOS Gm fender that I have had painted Tuxedo black ready to bolt on. Once that is done it will look pretty good, maybe not show worthy but pretty cute.

Runs well and everything works. The seat is starting to show wear where I have to slide my ample butt into the seat because of my short peasant like physique.

Any here are some pics.
