Right Hand Drive GM Cars available in 1966

I may be redoing old material here that has already been discussed but I was idly looking in a 1966 Fisher Body Service manual from GM of Canada and ran across a page that detailed all the RHD models that were available in 1966.

I'll attach the page that I scanned here but here is what I was able to summarize:

-Chevelle 300 Deluxe and Malibu 4 door station wagon

-Chevelle Malibu 4 door hardtop

-Chevelle Malibu convertible

-Chevelle 300 Deluxe and Malibu 4 door sedan

-Beaumont and Beaumont Custom 4 door station wagon

-Beaumont Custom 4 door hardtop

-Beaumont and Beaumont Custom 4 door sedan

-Chevrolet Impala and Caprice 4 door station wagon

-Chevrolet Impala 4 door hardtop

-Chevrolet Impala convertible

-Chevrolet Biscayne, Belair and Impala 4 door sedan

-Pontiac Parisienne 4 door wagon

-Pontiac Parisienne convertible

-Pontiac Strato Chief and Laurentian 4 door sedan

-Chevrolet Chevy II and Nova 4 door station wagon

-Chevrolet Chevy II and Nova 4 door sedan

-Acadian Invader 4 door station wagon

-Acadian Invader and Canso 4 door sedan

Not too sure what it all means but it was sort of interesting.

I'm looking at the list of RHD cars that were offered and have some comments. In this post will start by addressing just the A-body line.

On the A-body section it lists the 300 Deluxe (134-series) station wagon & 4-door sedan. The surprise is that in Canada for 1966 no 300 Deluxe models were built (same for 1967), only the base, expanded 300 series (132-series). They don't even mention the Canadian-exclusive 300 convertible or station wagon. It seems to me in that regard almost as though they are talking about the 1965 Chevelles, since they did build the 300 Deluxe in Canada for 1965.

Curiously they do mention the 300-series equivalent Beaumonts (732 series) were offered as convertibles and wagons.

Remember that unlike the Beaumont which came only from Canada, the Chevelle could be drawn from Canada or U.S. plants. That is what GM Canada did when they offered the Concours wagon in 67 and later, plus the El Caminos. Also the SS396 in 1966 & first quarter of 1967-model production would have been U.S. sourced.

The 136-series Malibu in RHD configuration was available in 4-door sedan, 4-door hardtop (sport sedan), station wagon, plus convertible (a surprise and I wonder about it). Of note, the equivalent RHD Beaumont Custom series offered the 4-door sedan, 4-door sport sedan, plus the wagon (no RHD convertible). They also refer to the Beaumont as an Acadian Beaumont, but that practice actually ended with the end of the 1965 models.

The RHD Chevelles & Beaumonts together shared a flopped 1964 Chevelle dash. I also have never seen or heard of a RHD Chevelle or Beaumont as having anything but an inline six from the factory. With the sixes they had a special adapter that relocated the oil filter upward to clear the RHD steering box. No such mention is made for V8s, supporting my theory that they didn't do RHD V8s on the A-bodies.

No other divisions did RHD A-bodies.

To summarize the A-bodies according to the Fisher Body list in the context of RHD offerings, and what I believe could have happened in order to comply with the list as shown:

Chevelle 300 Deluxe 4-door sedan (U.S.)
Chevelle 300 Deluxe 4-door wagon (U.S.)
Chevelle Malibu 4-door sedan (Canada)
Chevelle Malibu 4-door sport sedan (Canada)
Chevelle Malibu 4-door wagon (Canada)
Chevelle Malibu convertible (U.S?)

Beaumont 4-door sedan (Canada)
Beaumont 4-door wagon (Canada)
Beaumont Custom 4-door sedan (Canada)
Beaumont Custom 4-door sport sedan (Canada)
Beaumont Custom 4-door wagon (Canada)

I believe all the above were six-cylinder only. If somebody can provide documentation to support a RHD V8 A-body Chevelle or Beaumont then it would establish that V8s were offered. The fact that they list models as 132, 134, 136 (all V8) is a red herring, as they don't list any sixes at all, plus Fisher Body was known to refer generically to the various series in the V8 sense (just look at Camaros & their trim tags as an example).

I am also surprised to see a RHD convertible was offered. Of note is that it was only offered as a Malibu. Perhaps there was that single option for the RHD market just in case. I have never heard of anything other than 4-doors but I could believe wagons. Convertibles I am doubtful that they did them, but who knows? RHD production must have been fairly low, and anything other than a 4-door would have been exceedingly rare.

Do you think my theory stands as plausible?

I should have mentioned that this manual has a printing date of August 1965 so some things that were planned may have changed, as they do.
