Need help identifying an older tool.

I was out at my sons today and he brought out a tool that he inherited from my father in law. He was wondering what it was used for as my father in law has now passed on. I have an idea but definitely not sure. Any ideas?

That looks like a tinsmiths soldering iron.  It would be placed in a blacksmith style forge and heated up. It still looks like it has solder on the tip.

I have to be more open minded when I read the subject line of forum posts. First I thought Todd's hornet post was AMC related and now I thought there was an older forum member you didn't like and you were trying to figure out who he was....

Back in the day Shop Class that's what we learned to solder our projects with, used to scare the heck out of me because we'd start screwing around with them when they were red hot like they were branding irons and that was a sure fire way to get lines from Mr. McCullough except in his shop class you had to do the lines in drafting lettering. Thanks for that memory jog Jerel.

Used with a blow torch like this. Just like an old Coleman lantern or stove. White gas & pump it up..

Whoa Geoff no insult intended from him Im sure. Ive made a career of being called that and almost made a living doing it. Long as its level, square, and plumb!  When applying for a loan though I always put down I was a homemaker.

Geez that old blow torch was another thing that freaking scared the heck out of me, My Grandfather and Mr. Phillip across the street used to paint houses after they retired and they'd be up a 12 foot wooden extension ladder torching away at the windows and trim, two old guys full of badassery who lived in trenches for 4 years took a few bullets some shrapnel and carried on.

I too remember blow torching the paint.....that lead paint stuck real good and the fumes from the torch were a killer (who knew).

My auto shop teacher "Johnsy" always said "I taught your older brother Jim. He was a real ace spelled a-s-s". He liked me.
