A friend had a 1980 el Camino and transplanted the dash, interior and front sheet metal from a 1980 Pontiac Le Mans. It was all a direct bolt on and looked really good. It was good for lots of odd questions from people.

I wonder if that was a flower car, looks too pro to be a hatchet job.

I thought the tailgate was a little funky and he says it is a chopped wagon. If it were quasi factory, ie. a flower car made in 59, it would likely have the 59 el Camino roof/rear window area, tailgate and box interior? It looks not bad.

They did a good job on the GTO.

The 59 Olds is interesting, but I dont think it was done by a professional coach builder. I think that a good shop would have had the rear window further back for more room in the cab. It looks very cramped. I think my head would be touching the rear window.

Coach builders were usually quite elaborate in how they built the cars.  Check out this Caddy flower car from the period - lots of work there, and lots of attention to detail.  Iit would have been all made from new parts at the time - some from GM, and some of their own.

If you look at the bed and tailgate of the Olds, you can see it's built somewhat roughly in comparison - a great job for somebody's home garage, but not at the level of a coachbuilder.  Definitely built out of a 4-door sedan.

Not sure what the rear glass is out of, but it looks kinda like a '61-ish Ford or something...

The sweetest conversion i ever saw was a 1959 American Pontiac turned into a 1959 Pontiac El Camino. The car was a perfect restoration of a car that never existed. To look at it, you were convinced in every way that GM actually built the car originally. I wish i had pictures to show it.

That GTO "Goat Camino" came out well but it better have a Pontiac V8 under the hood.

As for that '59 Olds, amateur attempt at a shop. Customs were still being done when that Olds 98 sedan was cheap to pick up 2nd hand. It would have a 394 and relatively strong axles. Many cars like that around Niagara ended up becoming chassis-cowl flatbeds for use in orchards. I remember them well but just can't seen to find a picture of an old 50s/60s barge. There was a '64 Meteor front end flatbed on the edge of town at an orchard that I remember back in the 70's.

That El Catalina in the Hagerty article is well done. Gorgeous. When I think how many of the already rare 59/60 El Caminos had their roofs chopped off during the silly plexiglass hinged dome era in the early 60's like something out of Captain Scarlet.

The 59 was a factory prototype made by GM, then they never decided to build it. I really like the

looks though.
