"Echo in the Canyon"

I just watched this documentary on Netflix called "Echo in the Canyon" about the music scene in the mid 1960's in the famed Laurel Canyon area just outside of LA. If you enjoy music from the Beach Boys, Beatles, Eric Clapton, The Mamas & The Papas' etc you'll really enjoy this documentary. Lot's of great vintage footage from that area (and LA) with lots of cars.

Mary and i watched this great special about a month ago and we loved it. It represents one of the greatest periods in musical history. For me personally it represents the beginning of the period when music actually mattered on a far bigger scale. The fifties, sixties and seventies were the period of music when things really came together and really mattered.

Produced and narrated by Jakob Dylan (Bob Dylan's son) a great artist in his own right.

Some terrific performers copying the original sounds. Jakob's accompanying singer 'Jade' has an amazing'

voice (not unlike Mama Cass) for these old songs.

Fantastic documentary. We only got Netflix in January and it was one of the first shows we watched.

A lot of talent resided in that area in the sixties.  If only I had a time machine... would be great to go back and see some bands from what is (IMHO) the best era for music... ever.

As I said earlier, I really enjoyed this show.   It also made me think back to my first visit to California in 1983.  I had no idea where to go other than Sunset Blvd and Disneyland.

A buddy and I spent the first few days in Hollywood, and cruised up and down Sunset Blvd.  We spotted many of the landmark places referred to in the film including the Whisky a Go Go.   I especially remember seeing the Playboy building for the first time.      I wish we'd visited places like the Whisky and the Troubadour for the music and atmosphere.  Unfortunately we were likely a little early as we drive by about 8:00, and I'm sure things didn't start happening until better part of midnight.

As a slight derail, we however did find our share of fun, including going with some girls to a party at Butch Patrick's condo.  I had no idea who Butch Patrick was, until they said it was Eddie Munster.    So one of my claims to fame is that I danced on Eddie Munster's coffee table.   The bar where we met the girls was just like in the movies, with girls in bikini's, etc.    Man, those were the days!!!

RE: Echo in the Canyon

This documentary was inspired by a 1969 movie called "The Model Shop". My wife thought it would be interesting to watch so we spent the $3.99 required to watch it on Youtube. The storyline is a bit weird (in this day and age the main character would have been likely arrested as he spends most of the movie following a woman he spots and falls in love with) however a lot of the movie is spent with the character driving around the streets of LA which makes for excellent car spotting! Oddly there is no music from any of the artists from the documentary in the movie.

RE: "Echo in the Canyon"

I was wondering about that movie as well, since it was mentioned so much in the doc.  Had never heard of it before.  Thanks for the rundown, sounds like I didn't miss much.

Our only trip to California was to San Francisco, so the closest we got to LA was a drive down the coast highway as far as Big Sur, and staying in Monterey for a night.  Of course the SF area has a lot of 1960s music history of its own.  Took the bus to the Haight-Ashbury area to check it out one day, saw some of the houses that some popular groups of the day lived in.  Stopped in a record store and saw a poster for a book signing by John Densmore (original drummer for The Doors), but missed it by a week.  Would have been cool to meet him, as he is an interesting guy (I did read his book, though).

SF still retains much of its architecture post-earthquake, so it was neat to check out a couple of the filming locations for the chase scenes in Bullitt.  I had written some notes down before the trip, from a website that mapped out the actual locations, and you could picture the cars flying over some of those more severe bumps created to maintain grade for the cross streets (it helps that I have a vivid imagination).  Pretty cool stuff, but not as neat as it would have been to have gone there in the sixties or seventies, I imagine (though I'm sure it wasn't all flowers and music...).  Back then on the Haight, you would have expected to see hippies and musicians hanging around, but they have been replaced with homeless people (many with apparent mental illness), of which SF has many - far more than I've seen in any other city that I've visited.

Watched it last night and thought it was...just okay.

I was expecting some tunes from all the artists from that era that were listed in the film.

The stories were interesting, but the sound track was disappointing.

The whole thing seemed like a big promo for Jacob Dylan and his band.

I didn't like any of his interpretation of the original songs...and I didn't need to hear his version.

Echo in the Canyon would have been far better to have the songs done by the original artists,

with film clips from that time period. Didn't need to hear Jacob Dylan beyond interviewing the artists.

Just my opinion.....

RE:

We watched it and enjoyed it. Two more good documentaries are Beyond Motown which features all the musicians doing the studio work for all the motown stars. The musicians were known as The Funk Brothers who played on more number 1 hits than anybody else. Another good one is Muscle Scholes a small town with a recording studio that all famous musicians recorded in with the studio musicians being called The Wrecking Crew. Both films feature artists from the 60's and 70.s. We watched both on Netflix. Al
