The fellow who is going to appraise my car had some interesting questions for me yesterday.

Apparently, Hagerty will pay out the appraised value based on his appraisal, within reason.

My insurance company will use his appraisal and their own person, who usually has no ideal about classic cars unless it's a Mustang or a Camaro.

I think I will ask my company some questions.

Co-Operators, Ontario, my bill is $ 108.00 for the year.(multiple policy credit applied)

Funny how after you renew, then you get all the paperwork that tells you what you just renewed for.

I ended up with Hagerty, when my original old car insurance company joined forces with another, and they sold out to

a bigger company, and they in turn sold out their old car portion to Hagerty.

The $40. fee* charged for "on this and future renewals, for arranging your specialty  insurance coverage,

and providing you with access to extensive collector vehicle valuation resources and online policy management tools."

*This fee is not reflected on the certificate of insurance as it is not an insurance premium

What a bunch of bull this fee is.....it also annoys me.

I see I'm also paying more for the Hagerty Driver's Club ($80.) and getting basically a magazine every 2 months

and flatbed towing for 80 kms. I'm sure previously it was 150 kms.

The rest of the "perks" (discounts)  https://www.hagerty.ca/drivers-club/discounts

and "events" are pretty lame.

CAA offers much better discounts with a variety of places.

(1000s of exclusive partner discounts available all around the world,

including deals on hotels, restaurants, clothing and special events)

Question is....what's the alternative to Hagerty for old car insurance in Canada ?

-G

Due to the lack of car shows, cruise nights and social distancing if you happen to take your classic for a spin they should be refunding at the very least 10% of the premium. It's always about the $$$$$$

I went with Vintage in Lindsay Ont. couldn't be happier, treated me great with loss of cars in garage fire, also have house insurance with same broker & rebuild of garage was Flawless with my contractor, didn't use theirs as they weren't local!!! Hagarty/Lant jerked me around for 4 months over wiring fire in Avanti and I had to get independent appraiser at my cost to come in & settle cause of fire [ or lack of] as they said " no flame no claim' even though harness "FRIED"

I have been with Gary Steeves Insurance in Moncton forever, they got bought by Hagerty a few years ago. Ill have to see what my renewal is for my August expiry. Agreed value insurance should be just that and if the company doesnt agree with my value up front, how can they argue at time of claim?

Next year here in Alberta I'll look at getting either

Legend ( https://www.legendsinsurance.com/ ) or

AMA ( https://ama.ab.ca/insurance/products/classic-car-insurance )

I noticed that the Alberta Motor Association, a division of CAA, seems to have better coverage than CAA in Ontario.

CAA (Southern Ontario)

Classic Car

Is considered a collector's item

At least 20 years old and hasn't been modified

Used for parades and exhibitions and more, up to 5,000 km/year.

Antique Cars

Is considered a collector's item

At least 30 years old and hasn't been modified

Used for parades and exhibitions and more, up to 5,000 km/year.

AMA ( Alberta )

  • Antique and classic cars
  • Classic trucks and utility vehicles
  • Modified vehicles like hot rods and replicas
  • Classic military vehicles
  • Retired commercial vehicles
  • Vehicles under restoration
  • Modern collectibles: 1980-2000
  • 8,000 kilometres or fewer a year for a vehicle 25 years or older.
