A GM Vintage documented 65 Beaumont wagon


Hi guys

Todd here, bringing this back from a few weeks ago just to clear the record. I still own this car and did not start the thread referred to by Carl.

I think it was some guy who just moved into my neighborhood. He actually approached me about buying a 396, 4 speed, and differential. Now that I know what kind of person he is I will avoid any contact with him. What a goof.

It is a 283 car, mostly original, except for some bad paint work and a new suspension that I installed. I am slowly building a restomod out of it. Nothing that cant be undone. I have a custom built 383 that I have just installed and am trying to find time to finish things up for break-in. Will post some pics when I get a chance. I have gained a lot of knowledge and purchased quite a few parts from members here and didnt want to think I was that moron. Thanks

I'm very glad you cleared this up. It just made no sense. And for the record, it's an amazing car, even if it's "only" a 283 car with bad paint work! It sure sounds like this guy isn't someone you want to deal with!

If you are willing I'm sure I speak for all of us here in saying it would be great if you keep us updated on your project...

MY BEAUMONT HAS 4 STUDDED TIRES AND 2 BLOCKHEATERS......AND LOTS OF OIL UNDERNEATH.  The other one has a longer roof.

Just a little update on the new engine in the wagon. Out with the original 283 which had served this car well but was getting a little tired and i couldn't really count on the reliability of it. Although it seemed to run better the more i drove it. 

Anyways, my local machine shop built the bottom end of this mild 383 sbc and i did the rest. So far, so good...still in the breaking in stage and i have a small oil leak to deal with but i am very happy with the results so far. I can see a new transmission (manual???) and rear end in my future biggrin

Hmm, I'd say  running a stealth 383 that could pass for a 283 is a stroke of genius. You will certainly notice a huge power difference. Any 383 kit small blocks I have seen have all been beasts. Next comes the trans, which determines the optimal gearing, which begins the search for a 12-bolt. Incidentally the 283s had 10-bolts but any 327s in 1965 Chevelles (& Beaumonts) were spec'd with 12-bolts (rescinded for '66).

You are on to what I was trying to accomplish. I even bought some 283 decals for the valve covers. One problem I ran into was my original alternator bracket wouldnt work with the tall valve covers. Had to use the universal chrome one and it isnt optimal. I may end up with a serpentine set up as well as headers and a proper exhaust. One thing at a time though. 
I will try to get some better pics on the weekend.

Saw one of these 2 door Chevelle wagons in a now defunct junkyard in Maine in the early 90s. I hope it got saved before the yard contents got crushed in the mid 90s.

 

There were lots of rare and complete cars in that yard the first time I was there in 1991. The yard was near an air force base and apparently many of the 40s to 60s cars were just driven in and parked. 

However,  nothing remained when I went back there in the late 90s.   I do know for sure however, that a 66 Bel Air 396 2 door post ex-Maine highway patrol car was saved by a fellow in NB who still owns it.

Thats Andys car. I just bought 2 Muncie 4 speeds off of him. Hes also on the finishing stages of a Burgundy 66 Biscayne 427 restoration. Im not sure if its an original or a clone, but it is VERY nice. Its a 2 door post as well, 4 speed, poverty caps, the whole nine yards. 

PS. He just built a new 396 for the blue car and is waiting to make a couple pulls on the dyno. Hopes to run it next year
