With the apparent success of the Bronco, did GM miss the boat with Blazer?

Apparently the first year of production for Bronco is sold out and the "1st Edition" model has been increased from 3500 to 7000 units (at $67000 USD each). Did GM drop the ball making the Blazer a mid sized SUV or should they have gone with a rugged, body on frame offroad design?

Ford tested this concept at shows years ago and was floored at the response.

I never saw an article on the Blazer with the author actually excited about the vehicle.

 No vehicle is for everybody, but there certainly seems to be a lot of people excited over Bronco.

GM could still save face by bringing back the "GMC Jimmy" nameplate on something like the Bronco/Jeep Wrangler.

I could care less. The Bronco looks Japanese and I'll never spend 67K on any vehicle of any make!

Being a Ford man, I love the fact that the Bronco is sold out. And yes, GM missed the boat, again.smile

That Camaro front end looks good on the new Blazer...........Now that's thinking outside the box- NOT!!!!!!!!. Still, MOPAR has more HP on the street than any other manufacturer. Go figure. I guess GM doesn't build excitement anymore.

I new that GM missed the boat when that disgrace to the Blazer name was first launched.

GM has been getting more and more out of touch, and I'll offer my opinion as to why;

Performance enthusiasts.

I would wager that a large portion of Camaro sales are purely former Camaro owners, or children of Camaro owners, or something similar;
GM has done nothing to garner any other group of enthusiasts - granted they made some neat Cadillacs, but let's be honest, how many people look at a Caddy and think anything other than luxury? - I'd wager not many.
GM has always had the Corvette, but it's impracticalities along with it's entry price keep the masses away.
Does GM have any sport compacts - nope, and they haven't for a decade.
I'd suggest that GM is largely staying afloat on former GM owners who have a high opinion of their products, and the fact that their trucks are probably still selling largely on the coat tails of the high quality every-day man's trucks they sold in the 1990's.

Enthusiasts are ever excited about the newest version of the Mustangs, and Ford has always done a very good job at marketing the Mustang - it has broad appeal;
but it's the enthusiast articles about the newest neat package offering that keeps this car fresh in the minds of many people;
Mustangs can be marketed to sports car enthusiast, and sport compact enthusiast - the latter is a big deal since they stopped making the Focus ST & RS... and the Fiesta ST.
For the sport truck enthusiast, there has been the Raptor, and even some dealers have gotten into the game of late by offering their own take on the F-150 Lightening.

Enthusiasts, make up the backbone of Challenger sales, and interest in that car has absolutley had a tickle effect into Charger and Jeep sales;
It also helps that they too are doing a very good job of offering special packages for different vehicles...

Both Ford and Dodge have, in my opinion done a fantastic job of continuing to create alluring products for a diversity of performance enthusiast, while GM has made due, going back to their old game of offering three different badged versions of the same boring vehicle... ect.

Should GM ever decide to get off it's laurels, I am sure that they could do a fantastic job - as attested to by their last Sport Compact offering, which held the Nurburgring lap record for production fwd compact car for ten years;
Ten years, how often are records smashed year after year... TEN YEARS!?!
That record was set with a bone stock* car, which had a tune that limited horsepower and torque to 260/260;
The Civic that beat it, had a decade of advancements, and fourty-six extra horsepower under it's belt.

* = The Performance Division later released a "Stage 1" tune, and was set to release a "Stage 2" package of some sort (suspected to be a cold air intake).

I don't think GM does anything to build excitement for the brand. We've all seen the Mopar videos showing Hellcat's roaring through the streets with the howl of the superchargers. Ford had all kinds of cool videos for the Bronco. Maybe I'm wrong but I haven't seen anything exciting about the Camaro, Corvette or V series Cadillacs. Ford just released this video for a 1400hp Mustang Mach E. (BTW - My wife made me turn the sound down on this video because the electric motors sound like a dentist's drill- and she hates the dentist!)

GM needs to stir up some excitement.

Cool video, Todd.  Makes me feel less apprehensive about the potential (pardon the pun) of electric cars becoming mainstream in the future.

But, yes, Ford is good at creating excitement over their vehicles.

Jonathan, I commend you for what I consider to be one of the most accurate, honest, and well written comments I have ever read on this site. You nailed it with your comment, ". . . GM has made due, going back to their old game of offering three different badged versions of the same boring vehicle... ect." Although I am note frustrated by Gm's lack luster performance, I am certainly proud of Ford's marketing strategies and obvious results. No doubt, the future of automobiles will be interesting, if not challenging, for all manufacturers.
