So our 1 ton dually 4wd 454 4 speed has a leaky clutch down below. No leak showing on the fire wall but losing fluid. Whats on the transmission end, just piping? I haven had one of these apart and wondered if there was any common failure issue.
She has lot of power and will pass anything but a gas station. Probably has 6-7,000 kms.
One of the guys took it in for an annual mvi and the dealer told them it likely needs a new clutch and hydraulic cylinder. The old honey never slips or has burning clutch smell. It has that granny low first gear.

So 28 is down below? And 17 is on the firewall Carl?

Filled it with fluid, seemed to work fine, but has started slipping. No clutch smell, but definitely slipping, why no smell?
I'm wondering if the leaking fluid has contaminated the surface of the clutch?
If the clutch master cylinder fails, would that not mean you had no pressure and the clutch would be staying engaged with the flywheel? It does shift and the pedal is now all the way to the top before the clutch engages and moves the truck. From what I read, there is no adjustment on the pedal engagement point.
Recommendations- replace the hydraulics and see what happens with the slipping? Or also replace the clutch, PP, clean up the flywheel?
Any advice much appreciated.

Back in the racing days we had a Mini with a slipping clutch and when the driver came in we popped the hood and shot the fire extinguisher into the inspection hole for the clutch. We new we would have to take it apart anyway ..
.
so it worked no more clutch slipping and we were classed as finishing the race
It is a fire truck Cliff, we have a bit of fire suppression equipment handy. )

I've heard of rear main seal leaks getting oil on the clutch or flywheel surface. Sounds like either that or hydraulic fluid is getting on there. You'll have to pull the trans and have a look.
It does have a small leak in the rear main seal. That means a new clutch disk and rear main seal. Possible to drop the pan on one of these things in the truck?

I guess if we have to pull the tranny, we'll likely put a new disk and PP in, TO bearing too?

I would think it needs a clutch. As the disc wears the release fingers on the pressure plate will gradually raise and push the slave cylinder piston deeper into the slave cylinder. When the piston bottoms out the clutch will slip. Due to the type of usage I would think that the clutch is worn out.

x2 Would think the same thing. Not enough pressure on disc so will slip but not smell
